Columbia University students began occupying Hamilton Hall shortly after midnight Tuesday as the university moved to suspend students who joined Gaza solidarity protests, and renamed it Hind's Hall, after Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli soldiers in Gaza in January. We look at how it was 56 years ago today, on April 30, 1968, that the hall was also the site of the historic student occupation by students who renamed the building "Nat Turner Hall at Malcolm X University." We feature an archival newsreel about the 1968 occupation and our interviews with campus activists on the 40th anniversary of the action about how they were protesting Columbia's connections to the military-industrial complex and racist development policies in Harlem.

  • Back in 1968, I was a fat and self-conscious 13 year old who just wasn't aware of this event. The shooting of students at Kent State University did wake me up to the fact that my government was something to be feared. Since then, I was directed to the truth by a friend who annually visited Damascus, Syria to teach at the American University there. So, I've been pro-Palestinian for many years. I knew that things were getting worse and worse prior to October 7. The genocidal actions of the Zionist state were not surprising knowing what I knew already. But, the continued support of my corrupt US government revealed what I had just felt for years. Though I'll probably upset some fellow Americans here, I say with conviction that our government is a Fascist imperialistic oligarchy which puts big money over its citizens. I hope that the young people will not forget this and continue the struggle to finally make the US by the people and for the people. It never has been. And, it's about time that we live up to our Constitution.

I never knew Juan Gonzalez was such a hero.

All the hate being displayed in Gaza, to genuinely believe that you're a chosen people and that gives you the right to commit genocide against an entire people, to drive them from their homes, commit absolute atrocities, and to further believe you're doing "God's work", is truly infuriating, heartbreaking, and shameful. That shame should be carried by anyone believing, justifying, and funding these war crimes. This MUST stop!
  • Greetings of appreciation and respect to all the free and honorable people of the world ❤❤

This protest was inspired by the 1968 protest against American war in Vietnam 🇻🇳 and we have decided to follow the same course 🇵🇸

Respect to all the young people risking their future livelihoods to take such a stand for humanity and morality.

The power of these protests should not be underestimated, dismissed, or villified. To STOP THE GENOCIDE, nothing else is left but protest. Great episode.
  • The children grow up just fine unlike what the adult have said , the surprise is now that the adult are the main obstacle for the youth
  • Take a moment to consider how history remembers mass student protest. What side of history are they typically on?
  • Wonderful footage. The civil rights movement in the North of Ireland emerged in 1968...

Abbie Hoffman said: “It will never happen again,” speaking of student protest. Had he lived, he may have been somewhat surprised.

Hippies broke ground for the now new anti war demonstrations. My generation, I remember well, though I was 12-13 yrs, and felt excitement and pride at being part of this amazing and passionate generation..Woodstock.

Imagine, the best minds in the country, standing up for what's right against a ruthless govt. They set a path so others could walk on it.

This is what it looks like to be on the right side of history, on the side of peace. Thank you for the report on this long and important struggle
