Gargoyles | From Waterspouts to Monsters

Published 2022-09-14
Peering down from high ledges with their garish facial expressions, gargoyles have long held the duty of protecting the innocent from the forces of evil...and masonry from rain water. While primarily their purpose is that of waterspouts, the design of gargoyles is rooted in medieval folklore of dragons and priests. Their unique designs have led to their appearances in later folklore and fiction, as creatures who remain still during the day but become active at night to battle evil...or perhaps to attack the unwary!

One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are Gargoyles!
  • The favorite creatures of Quasimodo, Batman, and Spiderman.
  • As a Doctor Who fan, you don’t know how happy I was to see the gargoyle from the Jon Pertwee era of the series.

The 'Gargoyles' cartoon was great stuff. Fond memories of it.

I knew you’d mention Disney’s Gargoyles by the near end of this clip. I loved that show.
  • Fun fact Keith David the voice of Goliath from the original 1994 gargoyles wants to remake it and I think they're in the process of it now not only that Jordan Peele wanted to make a live action adaptation of the gargoyles but Disney said no
  • I love Gargoyles, the stories that have come to be based on them is fascinating! And the TV show was one of my earliest childhood memories that I still enjoy. This made my day and helped me out of a bad mood thank you for the video. :)

I remember hearing the story of these creatures in my high school art class.
  • I don't know if this is a weird coincidence. Or just amazing timing. My wife today knows I'm a huge fan of the television show gargoyles. So while she was at Target today she went and bought me a demona plushie from the show gargoyles. Then I turn on my YouTube subscription and I see this video on gargoyles. 😳

I've encountered versions of La Gagouille that describe the creature as a "great serpent" that possesses the power to "drink rivers dry," but they could never agree on the monster's gender; some did refer to it as male, while others claimed it is female since it was also attributed as being the progenitors of the gargoyles. The Disney animated series Gargoyles is still one of my favorite shows, even if the third season got a bit derailed thanks to executive meddling. That series gave Gargoyles their own culture and history, even going as far as to explain their young are hatched from eggs and are raised communally as children of the clan without specifying direct parentage so that they know they are truly children of the clan; it's stated that for Gargoyles to actually have names, traditionally, is a divergence from the norm.
  • growing up gargoyles was my favorite show. and I watched it faithfully. It took me a while to get a Disney+ account. And when I finally got it I was amazed by the fact that I had not only learned a lot from the show, but the internet as well.
  • Should have known that gargoyles would show up here. I miss that cartoon.
  • I been in love with gargoyles ever since I first watched the tv series it was amazing and magnificent every episode was awesome beyond words

As an american boy from the early 90s-2000s, i barely know what a gargoyle is, other than the cartoon. i dont think i would really know they exist otherwise
