EPISODE 192

In this episode we finally make a decision about how to fix our gearbox / propeller issue, and we haul Tally Ho out of the water for a few days to get it sorted!
Meanwhile, Tally Ho’s original capstan arrives back at the boat, having been rebuilt by Keith Rucker and motorised by Webster’s Boat Machinery.

I'm 79 years old and a former US Navy man who spent 2 years before the mast. I cannot overstate how much I love this project and these videos; they have enriched my life for 7 years and I'm still grinning like a mule eating briers every time I watch a new video. Congratulations to Leo and the expert crew. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the enjoyment I have received over the years. It's been a privilege to have witnessed the evolution of the new Tally-Ho!
  • @JShawseph
Shout-out to Bill for picking up the capstan!
  • @ukulelefatman
You are visibly happier these days Leo. You've got a spring in your step!😃
  • @MajorWolf72
500k, WHEEHOOOO! We‘ve all waited for that keeping our fingers crossed! Congrats, Tally Ho crew!!
  • @medickaisu
This series has the best un-boxings ever.
  • 500K.....Let's see what the town building inspector says about that!! Hahahahah! Well done! DD
  • I watched the entire casting of the cap and all the Keith Rucker Vintage Machinery Videos. Unbelievable. Keith Rucker with incredible accuracy in machining was great! The capstan was a way bigger project than I had imagined.

Watching Dave make the pattern for the top of the capstan, Clarke and his struggles to cast the capstan top, and then Keith doing all the complex machining to make room for the gearing to make the capstan both manually operated and mechanically operated, was quite the project. I think the restoration of the capstan was a little more involved than Keith originally anticipated, but he got it done. Would love to see those guys go for a sale on the Tally Ho one day.

I spent a couple of days in Port Townsend last week, and got to see Tally Ho in person. She is extremely beautiful. Leo is a very lucky guy to have been able to inspire so many people to fund his dream, and to have had the access to so many incredibly talented craftspeople.
  • @BillB23
Tally Ho is properly steam punk now. 19th century (and older) cosmetics and 21st century guts. A marvellous mix of tried-and-true and cutting edge. Thanks, Leo & crew, for multiplying your work load so that we can sip coffee and watch you work.
  • Leo, have been watching progress on Tally Ho for years with much interest. We were just in Port Townsend and had the opportunity to see the boat in person. Blown away by the quality of workmanship. The videos don’t do it justice. Thanks for amazing video content chronicling the project.
  • The restoration/mechanization of Tally Ho's capstan was a huge community effort, my Thanks to EVERYBODY who stepped up!!! ; -)

Leo, I was in Oban, Scotland this week and saw a beautiful and huge yacht in the harbour and went over to have a look. Upon looking up the boat information the first video that popped up was of you sailing her - it was Adix! I had seen this video previously, but I didn't quite appreciate your prowess as a sailor until I saw her in person. I didn't think you could impress me more! Tally Ho is looking beautiful and I'm so excited to see the adventures that are ahead.
  • Glad to see the capstan is back home. I can certainly say, it has been an adventure
  • @vasari9198
It’s no small thing to say that Leo is a great YouTuber, considering he is a boatbuilder and sailor.
  • @ditto1958
I guess I’ll say it again: what a beautiful boat!
  • @malakai651
I have to say that the guy who drove across America with the capstan for you has my greatest admiration, just like the pink fireman some time ago.
  • Anyone else notice the sky was crying when they pulled her out the water, but bright and sunny when she went back in. Must be a sign... Keep up the great work, such an honour to watch, especially since I can't get there from Australia.
  • @RemedialRob
I watch Acorn to Arabella as well and there is a stark difference between their DIY approach and Leo's wall to wall professional everything. I don't know if it's a Pacific VS. Atlantic thing or what but Arabella has been about a year since launch and it is not only cramped and cluttered but the entire boat looks like it needs to be hauled out and refurbished. The hull is especially grimy which has to be costing them knots and fuel. Acorn to Arabella makes me feel like anyone can do anything if they are healthy, have the funds, and put their minds to it. Tally Ho on the other hand reminds me of that painful difference between things done, and things done right. Both are great examples though.
  • @witerabid
I'm still overwhelmed by how great her hull looks. It's almost a shame the beautiful teal is only visible to people on other boats when Tally Ho is heeling over. 😅
