The 200m freestyle is the meeting ground of the most events - it matches the 100 freestylers moving up, the 400/80 freestylers moving down and the stroke and IM swimmers moving across. It is the event that defines the strongest swimmer.

Ariane Titmus has just slashed 0.62 seconds off the womens 200 freestyle world record at the Australian Olympic trials. O'Callaghan also came in under the previous record in second place.

I think pacing makes the difference, most of these winners come from behind. If a swimmer goes out faster and then tries to hold on they tend to be overtaken at the end. Like Titmus tried in the race you spoke about.
  • It's not sure Summer McIntosh will swim 200 freestyle. She can compete in 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle...
  • @dalenesbitt
You're a brave man for making a prediction like that. While I'd love it if Summer won (I'm Canadian), I don't think she has the same top-end speed as the other women in the event. At least, not yet.
  • Thank you for your analysis and this video! You have made it so interesting and explained it so well, that even a non-competitive fan like me understands and appreciates what you are saying. I live in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, so I snorkel, slowly, to see turtles. I have loved watching Katie Ledecky, so now I can see HOW the swimmers succeed, thanks to You. We will all watch the Olympics and your videos! Cheers, Susan

Mollie O callaghan was still recovering from injury when she swam this. She has looked far better than titmus this year. Mcintosh probably doesnt even swim this event lol
  • It would be kinda wild to see someone win the 400 IM and the 200 free on the same day - especially in such a stacked field 🤔
  • @cmillholland
I tell my swimmers their are four variables in swimming: Size and body makeup, biomechanics (technique), biochemistry (conditioning), and psychology. This video demonstrates my point.

I thinking Australia's one-two race if that makes Final, Libby Lenton/ Libby Trickett did make 100 mtrs final at 2004 Olympics but being the world record holder until the semi-finals. that you top 3 that is going great if it come off.
  • I have to go with your opinion. McIntosh is older now and this should be her time to hit the first step on the Olympic gold trail. She does not have the same weight of expectation as the others and she has "grown" into her position. The others know she's coming for them.

Hong Kong team deserved to be named in the video.
  • @robohippy
Well, like you said, one tiny mistake could cost a victory. It will be interesting to see. For me, I think the differences in swimming styles, specifically breathing patterns can make a huge difference. Summer swims gallop style. Ariarne swims on a 2, 2, 3 pattern. Maybe a topic for discussion on one of your videos. For sure, if you go into oxygen debt in a race, you never catch up.
  • @Ineddiblehulk
Titmus is not losing to Summer. MOC might beat her. But Titmus is the favourite even with MOC as WR holder
  • @SE55fly
not sure I agree with the O'Callaghan getting third prediction, she has a lot of momentum and confidence, she's been doing roughly 1 second PB's every year the past few years and whilst I don't think she'll have quite as big a drop this year, I still think she'll drop time considering her injury a few weeks before Fukuoka and in her most recent meets she's been swimming faster than she was at similar meets prior to breaking the WR, I also just don't think McIntosh swims it in Paris due to the schedule, and the last time O'Callaghan lost to Titmus was 2022 Commonwealth games
  • @sergimila1206
I itch for Siobhan's victory, it is a hunch, don't ask me why 😉
  • Sorry to butt in in the wrong place, but I'm guessing your video on pool cleanliness was taken down. I'm I right? Could you explain why?
