The first time I heard this song, I was backpacking on top of hawksbill mountain near Morganton NC, and I can not explain the rapture of watching the sun rise on top of a mountain with this song playing. The cool morning breeze whipping through your hair sharing a blanket with your friend, each with about an hour of sleep, and realizing it’s the first night of summer vacation. Pure bliss

Lie down with me, my dear Lie down Under stormy night Tell nobody My brother, where do you intend to go tonight? I heard that you missed your connecting flight To the Blue Ridge Mountains, over near Tennessee You're ever welcome with me any time you like Let's drive to the countryside Leave behind some green-eyed look-a-likes So no one gets worried, no So no one gets worried, no But Sean don't get careless I'm sure it'll be fine I love you, I love you Oh, brother of mine In the quivering forest Where the shivering dog rests Our good grandfather Built a wooden nest And the river got frozen And the home got snowed in And a yellow moon glowed bright 'Til the morning light Terrible am I, child? Even if you don't mind In the quivering forest Where the shivering dog rests Our good grandfather Built a wooden nest And the river got frozen And the home got snowed in And a yellow moon glowed bright 'Til the morning light Terrible am I, child? Even if you don't mind, no

Want to be impressed by this song more? Pay attention to the words "and the" the rhythm and beat of how this repeats is more like poetry then music lyrics. It breaks the song up into separate tiny little scenes, like quick flashes of images in a montage of passing time. Each repeat of the phrase "and the" primes you to transition into picturing a new scene.

I love how sweet Robin Pecknold's writing is. It's so un-cynical. Like, every other song about running away frames it like "screw them all, it's us against the world," but this song goes out of its way to "leave behind some green-eyed lookalikes so no one gets worried". That's just so nice! The whole album has moments that are just sweet like that, and as a pretty cynical songwriter myself, it's very refreshing these days.

This song always gives me flashbacks of my brother who passed in 2009, his choice. But it’s almost, how can I say, an happy flashback. Sitting in the passenger seat of his van close before he was gone staring out the window listening to this as he drove…. I listen to it with closed eyes to remember the moment.
  • It is incredible the inexplicable feeling that this song brings. It is a journey in that melody.

Back in 2010 I had a break up and I seriously thought I was going to die from the grief. I would go running in the morning at the nearby park and play this album. Really think it helped save my life.

This song is so perfect, it's as if it has always existed, and Fleet Foxes discovered it and brought it to us.

2:01 this part!! literally I can’t explain the beauty, it’s so special
  • I don’t know what memory that I can remember triggers this, but this song makes me feel peaceful, like I’m back home among the rolling green hills in Tennessee, not far from the Appalachians. This is precious.
  • This song is beautiful. I rarely comment on anything but this song is unbelievable.

Reminds me of when I traveled the country and all of the adventures I had. Now I play this band for my kids to calm them down 😌 love it
  • @messythehead
This song reminds me of when I went to visit my ancestors and family graves on the Blue Ridge Mountains, or going on hikes off of Skyline Drive and spotting bears, then running away.
  • One of "those" songs that reaches into your soul and pulls out an emotion you always seem to forget how to feel.
  • @summerestee5148
This song I feel in my soul when I listen to it. I believe in reincarnation and hearing it somehow makes me remember how old my soul is, how there is life before life and after, the eternal flow of energy and light that our souls are. It also makes me sad. But also happy at the same time. The first time I heard it it was like a dejavu bc id never heard it before but felt like I remembered it.
  • Perfect for driving thru Blue Ridge Mtns today 2024! Rainy & the Sun peeking thru🙏🫶🌦️So thankful to live here.
