Video Description:
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by Roger Waters, Richard Wright and David Gilmour. It is a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett. The song was first performed on their 1974 French tour, and recorded for their 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. The song was intended to be a side-long composition (like "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes"), but was ultimately split into two parts and used to bookend the album, with new material composed that was more relevant to this song, and to the situation in which the band found themselves.

Lyrics:

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom.
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter.
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision.
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions.
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Tomorrow is the funeral service for my brother who took his own life on June 10, 2024. He suffered from schizophrenia. This will be the last song. He was only 39 years old. Now he is free. He didn't want to suffer anymore and made that decision for himself. It's okay for us. Rest in peace my little brother. We'll meet Again. Now you're having your Great Gig in the Sky. Love you forever

Pink floyd isn't just music, it's an experience.

My friends and I used to listen to this song/album late at night 40 years ago after the parties had ended. Complete silence, no iPhones, just listening to it. Every time I hear it again I stop what I’m doing and turn it up and I’m magically transported back to that era. I’m 57 now and a 25 year cop and it is a nice break/memory. Next year I’ll be retired and listening to it with a joint in my hand again.

This song reminds me of the the tale my mom told me about how i caught a fever so bad that we had to drive out of town but unfortunately we got caught on a blizzard but a man with gorgeous style of hair helped our car to go again. My hair was fully inspired by that guy, and anyone that mock my hair will face the consequences. Love you mom.. I grew up without father 😅

For those who aren’t aware, this song is about Pink Floyd’s original guitarist, Syd Barrett. Shine On (S) You Crazy (Y) Diamond (D). Syd apparently took a lot of psychedelic drugs while quite young, which is thought to have induced schizophrenia. (It’s also been said that his mental health issues were inevitable, but the drugs were a catalyst) “Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky”. That’s how a lot of people apparently described him after the damage was done. I hope he’s found peace.

A man, who was NOT my father but in adulthood loved and treated me like he was... This is his song. The great thing is that his wife and kids accept me the same. He has since passed, but will live on in all of us.
  • When you know the meaning and story behind this song, the image of the silhouetted figure fading away at the end seems all the more sad (At least, that’s what I feel). I’m also happy that in 2024 so many people are still listening to this masterpiece, and watching this beautiful video. Long live Pink Floyd! Shine on!

My fifteen-year-old daughter is listening to this. I've succeeded as a father. ;-) Edit: She has no idea who or what JoJo is (no comics at all). She just loves old music (Pink Floyd, Genesis/Gabriel, Eagles, Dire Straits/Knopfler, Queen… you get the idea).

Unlike nearly everyone on here, I am not going through tough times or have lost a child or a spouse or boyfriend. Life is good. I am blessed. And I just came to enjoy this song.
  • A tutti i cuori che ascoltano questo brano auguro tanta salute, gioia e serenità. In alto la Vita!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
  • This song is an absolute work of art. The way they describe Barrett and his mental illness is better than anyone could ever explain
