When following a whole food, plant-based diet, it can be a challenge to find meals that are easy to take on the go. We discovered these instant soups from Dr. McDougall's Right Foods and they are a great option for travel or just keeping around as a backup meal!

Since we try to keep our sodium intake low, we decided to check out three of the "lower sodium" varieties: "Chicken" Flavored Noodle, Black Bean & Rice and Split Pea. All of the soups are vegan and have no added oil.

In airports here is what I do: I take McDougall soup cup, go to either Wendy’s ( for a baked potato) or to Panda Express ( for a cup of rice), swing by Starbucks for a free cup of hot water and then reconstitute my soup and pour it over my starch. It works like a charm! Happy travels!
  • When I was in bible college 40ish years ago. We had a German chef and she served split pea soup over sauerkraut. It is so good. Call me crazy, but you will love it.

I have been making split pea in my Instant Pot for years. Eliminated the ham and add a few shakes of liquid smoke and it is still perfect.

Come fall until spring we make our vegan split pea soup weekly. Ours has split peas (obviously) diced sautéed diced celery onion, carrots and minced garlic and Mrs. Dash seasoning salt which is salt free. We often add steamed chopped up broccoli, cauliflower, or diced red potato, even diced fresh tomatoes to our individual servings. And we have also used our Excalibur food dehydrator to dehydrate for single serving sizes which we put in a pint size Pyrex containers to take to work, school, or out and abou. We simply pour in hot hot water to make a Dr. McDougall style hot soup.

Great video. Split Pea Soup is one of my all time favorite soups. I have a recipe if you would like to try it. 1 lb dried yellow split peas 1 onion, chopped 3 carrots, peeled and diced 3 stalks celery, peeled and diced 1/2 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped 2 bay leaves 8 cups no salt vegetable broth 1) Rinse and drain split peas, then put in a large pot. 2) Add rest of ingredients and bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 2 hours. note: do not use dry parsley, the fresh parsley gives it a wonderful flavour.

Dr. McDougall's soups are part of my lunch rotations at work every week. My #1 favorite is the Tortilla Soup...I do add a splash of hot sauce in the hot water before consuming. The Black Bean Soup is really tasty as a topping for a baked potato, with a a bit of queso and chopped green onions on top! Thanks for the review!!

Funny. I’m traveling...in NYC for the next two weeks. Most hotels will put a microwave in your room if you ask. And I bring a portable kettle...just stopped at Whole Foods and picked up 2 of the McDouigall Spring Onion soup cups...came back to the hotel...turned on my iPad and saw your video! Chicken noodle is my favorite but they didn’t have any at the local Whole Foods. Tip: on Amazon I bought a container of dehydrated mixed veggies....and I add a spoonful or two to my soups. You can carry those dehyrdrated chopped veggies easily and no freezer required.

My mom swears by a Dr McDougal split pea soup poured over a microwaved “ Baked” potato as the best super easy fast filling meal in a pinch.👍🏻
  • Split pea soup with carrots, onions and spices is so easy, delicious and cheap in the instant pot. (Using dried split peas!)

You have me a great idea - bring these on my trip! Thank you. I always have to determine what to take and this is perfect.
  • My fav is what I call potato stew...red potatoes, garlic, purple onion, carrots, broccoli, yellow squash, zucchini, kale, cooked in vegetable broth. Add salt and pepper. Yummmmm.

I keep these soups on hand always. Since they pretty high in sodium, I empty everything in a huge bowl and add 3-4 times the amount of water. It still feels salty but good😋
