RAWCLIFFE: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #16 of 172

Published 2021-08-07
Welcome to the "Queen of Villages". Yep this village has it's very own title, which it earned a few years ago, and I have to say it seems pretty proud if it! There's actually no Royal connection, but there could be, it certainly does seem like a place that would be fit for a King. In reality though, it is fit for a nice stroll around, because on the way you'll learn a lot about this fascinating corner of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

For starters, let's look no further than the village green. This is one of the largest village greens in the country, and in itself it has a lot to tell us. The parish church of St James the Apostle is located on the green, and so is the parish noticeboard, a bus stop, a flagpole and the well maintained village sign. It's a sign that these villagers like to keep their home looking nice.

So they should too, because there's a history to preserve, and the man at the centre of most of it is Ralph Creyke, a name that is synonymous with this village. He was a politician that lived in the Hall (which is now demolished with housing built in it's place), that same Hall which was once a hospital too! The village was also a port located along the River Aire, and although the river is a nit overgrown in this video, the wide bend in it is looked after for that reason usually.

Then we have the smaller settlement which also falls within the parish, slightly further South, but arguably, the area with way more to speak of than it's larger Northern counterpart. The bridge over the Aire and Calder Navigation was a hub for industry, boasting a paper mill, a brickworks and a waterworks, the latter of which was taken over in 1925 by CRODA - and you'll have to watch the video to find out what they're all about!

There's also the Dutch River, a vastly important man made channel which we'll see more of in future episodes,. It's just another facet to the already stacked parish of RAWCLIFFE.

The building next to the Free School was also a school. My dad went there in the forties and fifties. My great-grandparents lived in the former Free School, 88 High Street, for most of their lives. Carved in the brick next to the door are the initials of my grandmother and her brother and sister. Vandals! My grandmother lived at 3 The Green for most of her life - that was the white house in your opening shot.

I used to live in this village and the place with the raised mounds is a government site and was always very hush-hush. We were told that the mounds held petroleum or gas or something like that. Part of a strategic pipeline network. How true that is I do not know.

The humps at 19:13 are an aviation fuel depot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLH_Pipeline_System. Locally we call it Tellytubby land Great video btw

Petanque is like a French version of bowls. But you underarm throw the ball rather than roll it.
