President Biden’s State Department is launching the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, appointing American musicians from across genres as global ambassadors. MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports on this bid at cultural diplomacy, from Eisenhauer-era programs with Dizzy Gillespie to contributions from Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Marley, and speaks with two people involved in the new project, the founding member of Public Enemy, rapper and activist Chuck D and head of YouTube Music, Lyor Cohen, former Def Jam President.

Bob Marley is Jamaican and Neil Young is Canadian. Isn't cultural diversity wonderful. Music would be so bland otherwise.

Music Diplomacy… why not? Those of us involved in behavioral health know what a valuable tool music is. Fantastic!
  • Finally, some good news that has a chance of doing good in the world. Thank you!
  • Honestly, this is the first diplomatic news from the world stage that has actually made me smile in quite a long while... 😺😻

We need a huge group of musicians to make a new, Save The World, children, and peace song for our current world situations.

Brilliant idea. It's a language almost everyone understands. I even think the debate should be translated into hip hop, country, rap, etc. Everything is better received and understood in ones own way of speaking. Unfortunately the younger generation hears old people talking and tune out.
  • Let's not forget Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra or Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, both of which were founded to bring together musicians and artists from diverse countries and cultures and to share that music with the world at large. Music (and food and art) are wonderful non-political, non-threatening ways to learn about other people and experience their culture.
  • I've been told that President Eisenhower admired Lewis Armstrong, and asked him to tour abroad as diplomacy for the USA. When black students were barred from Little Rock schools, Armstrong called President Eisenhower and told him, I'll never play for America again unless you fix Little Rock. And Eisenhower sent in the National Guard.
  • Wild to know Tony Blinken is a rock n roll h Guitar player. 👍🎉

I think it was more than a Bob Marley’s music that united people 😂. I love his music though!
