Chattanooga Photowalk with a vintage Yashica 28mm lens on my Leica SL2

Publicado 2023-10-21
When I need some time to relax, what so I do? Go for a photowalk in Chattanooga TN of course! So when I go on a Chattanooga photowalk with a vintage Yashica 28mm lens on my Leica SL2, I tend to travel light and leave everything except the camera and a spare battery in the truck so I dont lug around a ton of gear for nothing. Today I photograph one of my favorite buildings in the area and then one that will be closing soon as well after many years of operation. Then it is over to Main street to get a couple of cigars and of course a few more photos and along the way I have a little interlude about why I shoot with the Leica SL2 instead of hte new hot rod machines from Canon, Sony and Nikon... I hope you enjoy the video and leave me a comment below!

If you would like to read some commentary on my blog, here is the link to that page as well.

I recorded this video with my DJI Osmo Action for video and I used my Fulaim X5 Wireless Microphone for the audio. To see a video for more about the wireless microphone system look here:

28mm primes seem to be the orphan focal length these days. People seem to want either a 35mm or 24mm but I think that they are one of the best focal lengths for a walkabout like you have just shown. Keeps them cheap to buy, too! It was when I realised that a big percentage of my photos when using my modern zoom lens ended up at 28mm anyway, I dug out an old Mitakon 28mm f2.8 that I had thrown into a drawer. Probably worth ten dollars on a good day but on my Sony and with a bit of concentration, it produces great photos. On my walkabout in Northern Ireland this afternoon, not as warm or bright as you had, I had the 28mm, a Pentax 35mm f2.4 and Takumar 50mm f1.4 with me. No modern lenses and no auto focus . Had a ball with a trio of lenses that cost about $60 in total. Modern lenses are great but they can make you lazy or think that you're more experienced than you are.

Always enjoy your photo walks. Autofocus is a real help for my eyes, and today’s zooms are great lenses. Your channel is a good reminder that a lot of good photos were made with manual focus cameras with a 28, 50, and 135 lens kit.
  • I've become such a big fan of the fixed 28mm focal length for street photography after using one. Great shots David, really nice work. Again I love the natural vibrant colors of your photos. Thanks for sharing.
  • Very good picture of Zarzours Cafe and I bet the owner would love to see it. Closed for good as of Friday, October 20 according to the sign. Your Yashica 28mm does an excellent job gathering in the light and the attached Leica seems capable of processing the images nicely in spite of its antiquated technology (kidding now!). Regarding your photo walks around town, heck yeah, keep doing them! I love 'em!

I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and this one is no exception! Living a bit farther north in Nashville, I often pass through Chattanooga, but never stopping. Your videos are very inspiring, and are motivating me to explore more urban landscapes.  I have always had a special place in my heart for Yashica. My first 35mm camera in 1970 was a Yashica, and my first medium format camera in 1971 was also a Yashica. Back in the early 1980's I bought into the Zeiss/Yashica Contax system. I have never been disappointed with anything from Yashica, and never understood why they never found a better niche in the American market. I also agree with you whole-heartedly about your choice of the Leica SL2. I'm a Hasselblad shooter, and look at it the same way. European cameras seem to be much simpler and clean in function, without all the complicated menus, dials & buttons of the big 3.

Nice photo walk, David! No matter how amazing your autofocus system is, there are still times when single point works the best.

David is always Building his portfolio...yep another building. Enjoy the walks and talks David, so don't ever stop. Yep, that ZF has my name on it but listened to Phil about it and he said he never touched the dials but I still like it although it's probably going to be another lens first.

All hail the 28mm! “You will be toad.” Will miss that place just for the parking sign. 😂
  • @bassangler73
I like the No Parking sign photo at the restaurant..The way " towed " is spelled cracked me up ha ha

David Nice pictures as usual I like my 28mm lenses but because my cameras are all crop sensor cameras I perfer using my Rokinon 20mm1.8 manuel focus lens which give me the equivalent of a 30mm lens. I like how that focal length covers the whole street as a rule on a photo walk

I am similar in that while I don’t care much for the latest and greatest autofocus, I do like having it because I have kids that can’t stay still. But, I prefer the interaction of manual focus. I too am looking at the Zf. But, I much prefer the UI of Lumix cameras. I have told myself that I can wait for that vintage/rangefinder style from Lumix. If it does not come then I may go for the Zf or A7C II.

Oh! And I just got the new iPhone 15 Pro Max set up. Discovered that you can set the main camera to 28mm by default rather than the regular 24. Why yes. I think I shall. :)

Hi David any content will do mate, hope you and family are ok 👏🙂🙂

You got to get a Fuji, best colors in town

Haha, add helicopters to the list of things that interrupted your video. I feel the same about my Z50 as my everyday camera with the pancake kit lens. I used to carry around a D500 with a Sigma 24-60 lens every day and I pick that up today and wonder how I did it. I wonder if the sign at 1:20 that says “You Will Be Toad” was misspelled on purpose.

Becoming my favorite outtake.... Get your camera out and go take a picture...
