It still amazes me how well this movie works as a horror movie and as an evaluation on how trauma can affect people and lead them to harming themselves or others.
  • This movie had the right amount of horror and suspense. Definitely what horror been missing all these years
  • This is where I thought Rose was going to make it out alive. Boyyyy was I all types of wrong 😭
  • I'd be really scared too if Marilyn Manson was chasing me through a cabin.

This is probably one of the scariest movies I watched. Not just because of the gore and jumpscares, but the smiles were just terrifying 😳. After the movie whenever i saw someone smile it gives me flashbacks 😰😰😰

Imagine conquering the demon by realizing you have to share all your embarrassing secrets with them.

I’m not a fan or horror movies and only seen a couple in my lifetime. Smile was the first one I had ever seen in theaters. I liked how it wasn’t just blood and gore but eerie in a psychological aspect. I found this monster to be goofy looking and comical, yet lowkey terrifying lol. I remember going home feeling creeped out, I couldn’t see another smile for a week lol.

So pleasantly suprised by this one, the moment I saw the illusion in the kitchen standing there in the dark I knew this was gonna actually be a horror movie not the crap we usually get. The director understands horror

The idea that pain / trauma generates more of itself, and is contagious, seems to be quite accurate. Then the smiling as a masking of trauma, the denial of its presence. I think horror is scariest when it takes real, human concepts that are scary, and uses fairly modest amounts of power to personify those concepts and give them sentience, whilst ensure their power remains bound by the nature of the concept they represent. In other words, giving something power without justification takes away the fear becuase it erodes plausibility, because on thing people deeply understand is that our reality is bound by rules. To me the entity in Smile is scary becuase it is a characterisastion of a part of the reality of being human, and therefore instinctily fits within our evolved understanding of the experience of being human.

Rose: "why are you doing this to me?" Entity: "because your mind is so inviting" We are our own worst enemy. Gotta find resolve in mastering your own mind, because it can literally clap you like it did rose.
