The problem with Waterfowl is it's TOO precise. If they had tweaked the dodge timing a bit, and made it easier to dodge through and keep track of what's happening, I think it would be less BS. But at the same time, I don't like when they nerf bosses for being too hard (unless something is genuinely messed up like their hitboxes).

Waterfowl can be a lot less of a problem if you run and jump away, or use an opaline and/or autoheal tears, or block the first barrage, or interrupt her, or use bloodhound step, or just quickstep. I'm not saying it's not bullshit, but the player can do some bullshit too.

Malenia healing on shields is fine, but waterfowl is probably overtuned for what it is. She should probably have her cut "on foot" version instead (which would also look like its namesake). Phase 1 should also probably be more aggressive though.

Shield build can work against Melania to be fair. Guard counters and pokes are WORSE but you will out damage her so long as you know when to block. I agree on waterfowl though, at least point blank waterfowl.

In Dark Souls 3 I began using the Caestus for the sake of trying something new and got completely addicted to the joy of Punching Everything To Death. It being funny is a great bonus, but I do unironically think it's an extremely powerful way to play. Each hit doesn't do a ton of damage, but each hit is also low commitment, especially when you're paying attention to which attack animations you are doing. So you can very easily stop attacking to dodge and keep attacking without costing much stamina. The low weight of the weapon lets you more easily equip sturdier armor sooner without sacrificing better rolls. I've since gone back to beat Demon's Souls, DS1 and DS2 with Fist Weapons and got through Elden Ring the same way. Punching Midir repeatedly in the head until he dies is one of the greatest gaming experiences I know.
