I don't live in the Lake District, I live in South London and our local chippie is really struggling. The cost of oil, fish, energy, rent, business rates etc has shot up. I'm not in a wealthy area, government data puts us as one of the most deprived areas of the UK. The chippie rarely sells fish nowadays and cooks it to order from frozen although it used to be fresh fish. If people can afford a visit it's just chips. It's been a chippie for generations and it probably won't survive the year. I have sympathy for the customers as well as the chippie as Ambleside is a tourist area and possibly tourists are paying over the odds to keep it going off-season. Fish and chips used to be food for the poor. Not any more, sadly.
  • To me, the trip begins when you leave your home. I always have enjoyed going out and watching the scenery. Fish and chips is the bonus. Love it. Do more.

Loved this video. Stunning scenery. Not speeded up and no unnecessary music which some vloggers seem to think is mandatory. Just your voice and natural sounds. So refreshing. The fish and chips made my mouth water too. You should do more like this.
  • Way back in the 1950's my Dad (Passed 14 yrs ago) was the only man in our street(raised on council estate, absolutely loved it) who actually had a car, and on the weekends he would take us out on picnics, down the beach, up to the West Midlands where his family lived (Dad came to Wales on the onset of WW11, met the love of his life, and stayed in Wales until his dying day, sure do miss him, Mum is still with us 101 yrs old, God Bless Her.

Hi Gareth and thank you for a wonderful video. It's nice to remind ourselves what a beautiful country we live in. Me and my wife used to run motorcycles in our younger days and seeing this stunning area brought back many happy memories. Take care and I am definitely on board for more videos like this. Peace.
  • I think it's important to also note the extortionate price of rent for commercial properties in the tourist honeypot which is the Lakes! I rent a retail space in Keswick for my shop and the rent is easily three to four times that of any general highstreet shop. It's not that we "just can" charge higher prices, we have to!
  • Great video - APPROVED 👍 Back in our younger days, fish and chips was a weekly event wasn't it. I moved from the Midlands to Bournemouth and everything was in bags boxes or trays. It's amazing how something as simple as not being wrapped in paper can destroy a culinary experience. The price in the 2010s was the same but portion size shrunk drastically then. I'd never ordered a large chips in my life until the move, now a large chips is still smaller than what we used to get pre-millenial. Now at 52 and watching my size, fish and chips both in price and calories is a very rare treat. Twice a year maybe? Yours did look good I have to say. For the price, I'd opt for a wetherspoons and get a steak and chips with drink thrown in. Although you won't get the view.

This video is great! Firstly, riding shotgun in your car always allows us to see the beautiful region where you dwell. I also enjoy seeing different eateries and what they serve. In the states, we sometimes can find establishments that are basically "holes in the wall" but serve fantastic food. Would like seeing these places in your neck of the woods too...
  • £3-95 for a portion of chips to take away is outrageous, even if Ambleside is a tourist town. I would think that even London is cheaper for chips.

I remember being in my early teens at beginning of the 90s and paying £1.20 for sausage and chips after being at cadets on a Friday night. The cost of food is absolutely crazy these days.
  • Got 2 Fish and large chips yesterday from my local chippy in a small village near Caerphilly. Excellent quality and the cod fillets were enormous. Total cost £13.60.

I remember my husband saying in the 70s when they start charging £1 for a pint of beer he’s gonna stop drinking lol. It never happened 😂😂😂

That's pretty expensive, but a great vlog, as always Gareth! The Lake District is such a beautiful part of the world, so maybe worth it after all. Please keep on posting fantastic content like this.
  • Lovely for those who've never visited to see one of the most beautiful parts of this blessed isle. Nice reminder for those of us who have.

This was absolutely charming! Sure, it was mostly a travelogue instead of a food review (maybe add a time stamp to skip to that part?), but it was such a lovely ride and your commentary made me feel cozy. I hope that you make more content like this, and that you have a lovely day!
  • What a way to have fish and chips on a sunny Friday afternoon in Cumbria. Thanks for sharing Gareth. 😉
  • I like these traveling excursions; new scenery always spices things up. Off to find this area on Google Earth!
  • Hi Gaz, hope you and the family are all well? Another cracking video👍 The scenery was just breathtaking. I think I'm not the only person that likes these out and about vids. But you do what you feel comfy doing, the reason we all enjoy your vlogs is because you're so down to earth and enjoy what you do. Hopefully we'll all see you do a live chat soon. Hope you, your good lady wife and the kids have a safe and lovely weekend. 😊
  • Just returned from the UK this week. It was my first visit. Tried fish and chips in London (the King's head pub, Kensington) for 18.50£. Then we went to Stratford upon Avon and tried fish & chips at a pub called Rose & Crown for 15.50£ and another chippie called Kingfisher for around 9.50-10.50£. Next we went to Cardiff and tried the Traditional Fish And Chips At The Hayes for 9£. Rest of our trip to Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh we skipped fish and chips. As Indians who grew up watching cartoons, reading comic books and playing video games, we were sooo excited to try fish and chips in the UK. But it was sooo costly and not the best tasting, that we decided to call it quits after trying 4 times. But our 14 day trip to the UK and Ireland was so beautiful and relaxing. Loved the nature, scenery, weather and friendly people with their food recommendations.
