Are we “wired for weed”? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly weed out the myth from the science behind marijuana with neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School and director of the MIND Program, Dr. Staci Gruber.

How is cannabis used for medical purposes? Learn about the latest research in the neuroscience of cannabis, how to formulate a longitudinal study, and how the different compounds interact with the brain. Find out the story behind the strain “Charlotte’s Web,” and no, it’s not that it makes you see words in spiderwebs. We explore our endocannabinoid receptors and where THC and CBD bind. Were we designed to get high? How is CBD used to assist people recovering from COVID?

We contrast the electrochemistry of the brain versus physical damage. Could CBD help CTE patients? How do you run a human trial on brain trauma? Find out about genetic profiling and how your DNA impacts the effects of THC on the body. Does THC cause psychosis? Is it true you should avoid THC if your family has a history of schizophrenia? Does weed help or hinder muscle recovery?

What are common myths about marijuana? We discover whether “reefer madness” is real and if marijuana really is a gateway drug. Are marijuana dependencies getting worse? What would a hippie from the 60s think of today’s weed? Is there a difference between a biochemical dependence and simply liking something a lot? What’s the difference between Indica and Sativa? How does cannabis impact the developing mind? All that, plus, how many other plants remain underutilized?

Have you used cannabis as a medical intervention?

My dad grew weed, lots of weed. It wasn't all his, other people paid him to grow theirs. He went to prison a couple times for it but he believed it should be legal and everyone should have access to it, also arrested a few times at demonstrations for legalizing weed in three different provinces. He died in 2003, weed was legalized in 2018 in Canada, it was something he wanted to see himself. I'm gonna smoke a joint in his memory now. RIP Pop.

I've used marijuana for fifty years. I'm 69. I feel like it accentuates whatever I am feeling at the time. It puts my mind in a place where I can deal with my pain and it gives me an appetite. I'm on chemo, so I don't feel much like eating often. It has helped!
  • @GrandmaTurtle
I'm old and I've been smokin it and eating it and growing it since I was 15. It helps me relax, sleep and decrease anxiety.
  • Thank you for taking on this topic. I'm a metastatic cancer patient in Wisconsin where we can't even get medicinal marijuana legalized for stage 4 cancer patients. It's beyond frustrating. We need more voices with large platforms like this to speak up about it for us little guys, so THANK YOU NEIL! It's appreciated!!
  • My daughter was on a clinical trial through the Miami children's hospital using CBD to control seizures. it really did work. We dropped out of clinical trial at the onset of the pandemic. started giving her THC and her seizures have stopped for over 9 months. I put 6 g of distillit into ghee butter and micro dose her a couple times a day.
  • I was watching this video and then my neighbour came and we watched it together. He said that this video changed his life and touched his heart. I then went and rented a projector in a big field and my entire town watched it and it changed their lives too. We all are so grateful. Thank You for this video….

I am a 2 war combat vet, and I can vouch for the therapeutic effects of cannabis on my personal psychology and mitigating PTSD.
  • I've been under brain cancer treatment and observation for 6yrs and cannabis helps. Thank you smart people for understanding and accepting the medical properties.

I been a smoker my whole life, I remember that Charlotte Figgy story, and yes opening up the nation to cannabis. Rip Charlotte❤️

I'm a navy veteran of gwot era. I'm grateful for the VA, but cannabis has helped me cope with depression and anxiety. Thank you for talking about the benefits of mother earth's medicine!
  • Take my comment with a grain of salt or don't, but I have been macrodosing marijuana for 5 years now. Don't drink, smoke cigs, or do any other drugs.. I'm a highly productive member of society, have made something of myself, and I'm in incredible health. I feel blessed to have THC.
  • Excuse me, Chuck, but I am over the age over 60 and I’m 100% in favor of legalizing weed. My mother was 60 something when she started smoking weed. LOL!
  • @Richard-ug4el
Dr. Staci is awesome. Love her straightforward answers, and she clearly knows what she's talking about.
  • The answer to Neil’s question is a resounding yes! In 2016 I rejected what medicine had to offer me for 5 autoimmune and unrelenting pain. I envied the dead and mourned my waking each morning. I live In Idaho and at 58 when I first tried cannabis in form of FECO out of sheer desperation and found it helpful but traveling to Oregon when i was in the middle of an inflammatory event, was a huge challenge. Things like prickly lettuce, and many different herbs used topical have been amazing for me. I believe based on what has finally worked for me that my vagus nerves was damaged during a double mastectomy . Multiple symptoms in next 12 hours suggest something bad happened to my vagus nerve but in 2001 I don’t know that my doctors knew what it was as they never found reason for gaining 26 pounds over night in the hospital going from size 8 pants to size 18, when I was too sick and power vomiting for hours to even eat. Over time inflammatory event on top of inflammatory event gaining 10-30 pounds in a 24 hr period left me at size 28 pants probably 270-280 I tossed scale at 250 size 24 or 3xxx pants. Thanks to a multitude of plant and mushroom experiments starting low going slow and tracking changes. I have learned to manually do what vagus nerve should do with manipulations, vibration, breathing, and many herbs. I am now 140. Size 6 pants. It requires 3-5 hours of physical theories every day and incorporating many things like humming tapping use of heat pads, layering of clothes to maintain body stability. Many adaptogenicgenic, mushrooms, and herbs are absolutely amazing in their support of my body. In 2016 when I gave up on medicine after 15 years of pure torture I was never under a 7 and daily off the pain chart. (My labor without meds is a 7 on my scale). I now have pain free periods most days, and some pain free days. Plants are amazing and I am totally hooked on herbs. Thank gosh for pub med but information on herbs is still very limited. We need a department of natural medicine to help better research, understand and educate the public about herbs and natural medicines and therapies. Thanks for distracting me from pain and encouraging scientific Experimentation over these years.

32:00 the big 3 + 1: Chronic Pain, Nausea / vomiting, MS, Siezure Disorder 50:45 States that have legal Cannabis have lower Opiod prescriptions...thats huge
  • I found myself in the ER multiple times from what was overeating and lactose intolerance which led to vomiting and upper abdominal pain for hours. When I saw a doc he wanted to blame marijuana which to me was crazy because i was using marijuana for many years before. He talked about a study in australia that said marijuana users were coming to the ER more often for the same effects i had. I stopped eating dairy or taking a lactaid pill and stopped overeating and completely stopped the problem i was having. But the marijuana use continues. Haven't been nauseous in years. Docs need to ask better and more questions before they try to make connections
  • I made a weed chocolate for my grandma when she suffered with a chronical pain and started to speak about suicide. It worked. She used it for about two years and then stopped. No adiction evolved.
  • @shannoncraig7163
OK so I gladly donate my brain for further research in this study...iv been smoking pot for 32yrs & not stopping anytime soon & my memory go's back to the age of 2 clear as day
