From the VHS cover:
To his utter astonishment, Chief Inspector Reg Wexford experiences some bizarre psychic sensations - like a vision of the corpse of the Marquise of Lai, dead for 2,000 years: while on an official visit to China. His sight-seeing party is made up of disparate strangers yet he feels a strange tension and claustrophobic atmosphere in their midst.
On his return to England, Wexford is called to the scene of a murder - that of a woman who was, by strange coincidence, on the Chinese sight-seeing trip....

Paul Goddard I cannot thank you enough for making these episodes available. Fantastic! I have been making my way through from season 1. For the life of me I cannot understand why they are not in syndication like some other classics of British TV.
  • This episode is one of my favorites. Love the Wexford mysteries! Thanks for posting all of these wonderful episodes!

I’m another very pleased viewer of inspector Wexford :The speaker of Mandarin episode ( from Australia) The scenes filmed in Beijing were so reflective of my time in that city in 1985 and 1987 the way the story unfolded gave it an accuracy and in H K and England as well . But that aside the way the characters are so subtly developed with believable skills, egos ,loyalties, weaknesses or lost hopes is always engaging with a Wexford story. What I particularly appreciate is unlike most U S detective shows a Wexford storyline is built very quietly and there’s also a welcome shortage of car smashes , buildings on fire or shoot outs
  • Third or fourth time watching. I think this is probably the best Wexford story line and best produced episode. Every time I watch one from this series, I see something that I hadn't seen previously. Great show.

Anybody else drinking green tea without having hallucinations? But great episode. Thanks.

Thank you again so very much @Paul Goddard! This is one of my favourite episodes. China must have great fascination for many people. I love Reg's guide, Mr Sung! He gets so cross if Reg doesn't do what he, Sung, wants him to do. I admire Reg, because he always shows interest and respect for the local culture whenever he is abroad. Here he is speaking a little Chinese, and he always wants to try out local delicacies as well.
  • Thank you Paul for posting, to Ruth Randall for an excellent story, and to all the cast for their excellent performances.

Paul Goddard, thank you for these wonderful shows. I'm American with English roots, father's side, so many of the details ring true with me --the poetry, names of cities, English tunes and choir singing. Alice, Anglophile from Livonia, Michigan.
