Maintaining your treadmill. There are a few things you can do to ensure your treadmill is running at its best and you get a longer life out of it. Like any other machine it does require maintenance. The first is lubrication. You just need to lubricate the top side of the running deck as this is the side the mat will actually rub against when you're walking or running on it. Most treadmills require a silicone lubricant to be applied every one to two months but this can vary depending on how much use the machine has and will vary between models. Some running decks use a specialised wax to lubricate them but this is not very common on domestic machines so please refer to your user manual if you're not sure. At Fitness Choice you'll be able to get spray on lubricant, this comes with a long plastic nozzle like this. Lifting the belt up with your finger slide the nozzle in as far as you can and spray up and down the machine. Keep the can and nozzle as level as possible to reach the middle of the deck and pull the nozzle further out to reach the sides. Make sure you don't spray or squirt lubricant on the belt surface where you run as it will make the belt slippery and dangerous to use. The next major thing to check on your machine is the belt tension and position. For the belt tightness check set the machine to operate at about six kilometres per hour, then proceed to do the stomp test, that will tell you if the belt is tight or not. If it slips when you stomp down you need to tighten the belt. At the back of the machine you will see the end caps have a screw in them, this is an adjustment screw that requires an Allan key. So you can clearly see what is going on we have taken off the end caps to show you how it works but you don't need to do this. Rotate in both sides the same amount of clockwise turns that will bring the roller back evenly and tighten the belt. First do one half turn then try the test again. It is important not to over-tighten or loosen the belt at any point. Next look at the belt's position on your machine. Visually check if the belt is aligned evenly. Here you are looking at the gap between the running belt and the side foot rests. You need to check that it is both straight and even on either side. To adjust the position of the belt you will be rotating the Allan key adjusters at the back of the machine individually. Turing either of the Allan key adjusters clockwise will pull that side of the roller towards you which will cause the belt to move slightly away from you. Rotating to anti-clockwise will move the roller away from you and the belt will move towards that end. Once it looks even at the far end of the machine check that the belt is straight up to the motor, we will demonstrate how this adjustment is done but we recommend you contact an experienced technician and not do it yourself. To adjust the roller near the motor, remove the cover while the machine is off and unplugged, find the adjuster for the roller, there is only one side adjuster at the motor end because the other side has the drive belt. Here you can adjust the roller so that the belt is straight all the way up the machine. Again don't adjust this roller while the machine is on or plugged in. Turn the Allan key in small increments and see how much the rollers and belt moves, over-turning can cause the belt to slip to the side violently tearing the belt. Turn in quarter turn increments and turn the power back on to check. Run it for a few seconds and see if the belt has moved to the correct position. Do this over and over until it is even but do not adjust the roller while the machine is plugged into the power socket. Once the belt is straight and even on the sides replace and screw in all covers. If you have tightened the belt of the machine and it continues to slip no matter how much you tighten it, then it requires a specialist adjustment of the front roller and motor housing. We recommend you contact an experienced technician for this adjustment. If you have any questions contact any of our staff at Fitness Choice through our website or with a free call to 1800 22 77 88.

I just bought a second hand treadmill. This video helps. When I run I feel like I'm gonna fall. The belt is loose. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong. Maybe needs to be lubricated?

We used lubricant on our last treadmill and it quit working altogether. The manual on this one says no lube needed.
