After days of mounting reports, Red Bull finally confirmed on May 1st that Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, their legendary chief designer and technical guru, will leave the team in the first quarter of 2025, after 19 years with the team. Adrian will be taking a step back from his role within the F1 team until then to develop their RB17 Hypercar instead.

Joining Bryn Lucas is Autosport’s Editor Haydn Cobb, to discuss the timelines that led to Newey’s announced departure as well as his exit plan with the team, as well as his future, with Ferrari and Aston Martin both reportedly keen to take on his services as the sport enters a critical development period, with the 2026 technical regulation change looming over the horizon.

Reminds me of when Ferrari confirmed that Mattia was not leaving and then two days later confirmed that he is leaving
  • @Max_Flashheart
Newey said he plans to sail his Oyster 885 from the Amalfi coast to croatia as his 1st cruise. He could then be mooring his boat at the Marina Romea a mere 1h 34m from Maranello.

Eras come an end and this is part of life. As a RedBull fan I wish him nothing but the best. I refuse to spoil his departure with speculations that are unfounded. I don't think Newey leaves because of the drama of behind the scenes because that's not a new thing he's been in the sport long enough to deal with such. Also Chris is a personal friend, so like most headlines is almost never what it appears. People will speculate but let's just enjoy the fact that he has run a good race.

Audi could be a darkhorse for neweys services!

Seriously only Newey could have this type of pull in the F1 industry and NOT be a driver. I honestly don't even think James Allison would get this amount of press if he left Mercedes. This is purely a tribute to the genius that is Newey.

This is Newey’s exact comment since you guys don’t seem to want to report it accurately. Newey himself said him and Horner are friends… “On a personal note, I would also like to thank the shareholders, the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerm Yoovidhya for their unwavering support during my time at Red Bull, and Christian, who has not only been my business partner but also a friend of our respective families. Also, thanks to Oliver Mintzlaff for his stewardship and Eddie Jordan, my close friend and manager.”

Hamilton and Newey news are the best thing so far in F1 2025
  • Skysports and several other news outlets are saying by him now solely working on the Red Bull Hypercar this will be his gardening leave & he will definitely be able to join another team after after the first quarter of next year, he will certainly be with another team for the start of 2026.

Newey wanted anything but to take away from the anniversary of Senna's death. IMO This is 100% Horner timing this news to do exactly that. What a world class c^t! *Newey is on the record stating he didn't want this timing. I find it hard to believe he then accidentally backed into the same day.
  • @motornaut
Newey has said he wants a "new challenge" - that doesn't mean retirement to me. My bet is a TW&T (Tues/Weds/Thurs) role at Ferrari or a consultancy role with plenty of freedom. He'll have road supercars, WEC programme and F1 to dig his teeth into.

Not a coincidence that Alonsos best results have come after teaming up with Lance stroll , Alonso really benifited from lances technical dominance with understanding the car and finding the optimal setup , Newey said stroll deserves credit for 21/22 RB and didn't get it ,Newey clearly unhappy wants to work with stroll and why wouldnt he ,

Why are the journalists allowed to know the name Fiona, yet they keep it hidden for the public?
  • Did Red Bull (or Newey) say he is leaving "in the first quarter of 2025" or "leaving in 12 months?" "May" was mentioned in this video. The first quarter includes January, February and March, not May or even April. Did the announcement include the mention of "gardening leave" which you talked about? My expectation is that with enough negotiation and monetary compensation just about anything is possible, including no (or very little) gardening leave.
  • @vikamm6119
I wonder whether working on the Hypercar is part of his negotiations with Red Bull and them allowing him to leave in May '25 and potentially move straight to a competitor. I imagine a 'Newey Designed Car' was in all the marketing brochures to prospective buyers and was the appeal for people to invest. If he just stopped working and went on a full gardening leave today, I imagine a lot of those buyers may pull their deposit. At £5m each, that's a huge problem to have.
  • While I think Newey is the most successful individual in the history of the sport (and I’m bummed for RB) if he retires the grid is going to close up the way everyone wanted with these regs.
  • @davec8921
He's obviously a very talented designer, but he was at other teams during the Ferrari and Mercedes dominant periods too
  • @d.b.cooper1
7:50 does his gardening period really start when he leaves? Some reports out there saying it’s 1 year starting now before he even leaves? Anything beyond Q1 2025 simply makes no sense going to another team as 2026 direction will have alreadly started & well underway. The best Newey value comes from new regs eras from the very start, not adjusting or changing your current concept.
  • @richot305
People need to realize that Newye is the single most important figure in F1 history above any driver ever. Remember, without a fast car, no driver will be successful no matter how skilled the driver might me.
  • He accounced his resignation on the first if May. Think about it people. Senna's last car was a Newey car. Senna left us on the first of May.
