Did you know Unown and female starter Pokemon were shiny-locked originally? Well, sort of anyway. These days there are loads of shiny locked Pokemon! and each time a new one comes around people always ask why shiny locking exists. There are a few theoretical official reasons beyond hacking, and this video briefly covers them!

Other Arguments include hacking, though I didnt want to open that can of worms because its dumb and stupid. Whats not either of those things though, are Helix Mattresses! My only issue with shiny "un-locking" via events is that they are usually one time only events. It makes it that more special sure, but also puts down the stress of having to pay attention to any an all events that possibly may be happening at all times.

Helix is single handedly funding this man’s entire life. Like I don’t think anyone could be more loyal to each other than lockstin and helix

I personally hate the idea of shiny locking Pokemon, mainly because it feels like its trying to use FOMO. They have cool shinies like Koraidon or Chi-Yu, but they're not available in game. Meaning you need to wait for an event that comes out so you can get one. Meaning you have to constantly be up to date with Pokemon news otherwise you'll miss out on the cool shiny. That entire time Pokemon will be feeding you useless news that does nothing more than waste your time.
  • It doesn't make sense for the Returning Legendaries in the Indigo Disk to be Shiny Locked when they weren't Shiny Locked in the Previous Game via Dynamax adventures! This also applies to the Blueberry Academy's hidden Meloetta encounter. How to fix the overworld issue? Have the game decide whether of not to have the Legendaries be shiny when you get the Snack from Snacksworth! Edit: after reading the comments I think I have a better Idea, You fight them the first time where they're shiny locked, beat them, and then every attempt after is NOT Shiny Locked.

Blood Moon Ursaluna can show up shiny in your pokedex if you have a shiny Ursaluna registered! It was a whole thing on Twitter XD

Shiny hunting is one of my favorite parts other than the competeive scene, I like to make teams for ranked by shiny hunting for a whole team to use, its personally what keeps me interested in the game. Legendaries being shiny locked takes away the fun of creating teams for me, especially when pokemon home and the dlc came out where its hard to use a team with non- legendary pokemon and get anywhere with it.

My current take is that it has to do with making a Pokemon a set spawn effectively "skips" the chances for a Pokemon to be rolled shiny So kinda like with Gen 2, it's not a direct choice but a result of something else putting a Pokemon in the over world or in cutscenes shiny locks it, the Switch era is what solidified it for me as most legendaries in SWSH are shiny locked but not Regieleki and Regidrago the 2 that don't have any cutscene appearances Why they've handled returning legendaries the way they did in Gens 6, 7, and 8 with the Hoopa portals, Ultra Warpride, and Dynamax adventures, keeping them out of the overworld and cutscenes so they can be shiny those times which further explains why they did it that way 3 gens straight, which is why they aren't in SV they put them in the over world this time because people complained they weren't doing that

Interesting that you show the Ash Caps, as all but one is shiny locked. Within Ultra Sun/Moon you are able to Shiny Hunt the Partner Cap one you get from the Movie's QR code (Due to a bug with the game checking your Trainer Secret Value instead of the OT "Ash" of 1009. So as long as your TSV isn't 1009 you can encounter it shiny)

It’s interesting learning about how Shiny odds interacted with IVs in the early games. I had no idea about that.

For the record, the Master Ball was hard-coded to never fail. It’s a check done before doing any calculations.
  • @camjam5740
I also think part of the reason for shiny locking has to do with Pokemon GO. In those games, you can obtain previously shiny locked Mythical Pokemon through..paid events or buying enough raid passes to finally get one.
  • @SkyDragoon
I thought you’d be mentioning how they are probably shiny locking legendaries to make people play Pokémon Go to get them, considering how they locked old legendaries in SV.
  • @gaspelios3340
4:02 You think that's bad? Imagine running by chance into both a male shiny combee AND THEN a male shiny salandit...
  • @gfdx3214
I kinda have the feeling that Gamefreak has taken what were logical shiny-locking's at first and then kept using them on Pokemon that shouldn't have gotten them
  • @Dwarfaholic72
I'm surprised you didn't even touch on Gamefreak locking all legendaries, including ones previously not shiny locked even just a generation ago

I used to shiny hunt in sun and moon while watching Netflix shows, it was really fun watching the office and doing sos battles because it helped me with my adhd. It gave me a physical stimulate to passively do to help me from getting bored or distracted from the show. Now it’s become a bit of a hobby I enjoy.
