Couple's Impressive Self Reliant Life on a Remote Tropical Island – Off Grid Living

Published 2024-06-09
Marjo and An have an incredible off-grid homestead lifestyle in the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. They've built their own home using locally sourced wood, they harvest fruit from the forest, they fish for their protein, they raise chickens for eggs and meat, and they also generate solar power, harvest rainwater, and use a well for their water and electricity. The island they live on does not have any villages or roads, so everything is transported with a small handmade boat, from their groceries to their fuel. It's not an easy lifestyle that they've chosen, but it is quite beautiful and rewarding (and they can surf from their front door!).

You can follow and find out more about Marjo and An's incredible life on their YouTube channel, Our Island Life:

This is the way of living that I grew up in. So simple, no bills to pay, just pure quality of life. I wish you both unlimited happiness.

Samoan here, the fibrous husk the lady is using to scrub the dishes with, we do the same. We use a separate coconut scrub to wash our bodies with. Use another one as a strainer (to extract coconut shreds from the milk/cream). Coconut is a versatile and sustainable plant life and we love using it in every day life. 🥥♥️

This is how human beings supposed to live, in nature and peace, this modern life is oppression and lot's of depression, everything we eat contains dangerous chemicals, not even clean air to breath anymore, people are working hard to afford to make a living, I am happy that your have found your freedom and peace, this is what I am hoping to achieve soon, ❣

I'm Indonesian, I'm 18, I live in a village in a mountainous area with high rainfall and a very short summer, but I really like it. Someday I want to build a simple house far from the crowds, to live independently and enjoy life in my own way

That new house is gorgeous! What a life you two have built. ❤
  • Your self-reliant lifestyle on a remote tropical island is truly impressive. Embracing off-grid living as a couple showcases your resilience and commitment to sustainability. Your harmonious connection with nature sets an inspiring example for others. And I Am Floating Village Life

Most of the people that want to move to an island to live, want to do so in “ luxury”. You two are doing an amazing job! House is fabulous

You guys are living in a piece of paradise. The ocen looks very clean and beautiful.
  • @anggiagra
I love when she said “everything has spirit…not only human but also tree, animal even our house”👍
  • Though it is a beautiful setting it seems like a very hard life and too isolating for me. But I must say, I was completely taken aback by the beauty and quality of the home that he built. I was expecting a much more rustic and basic home. It looks like a professional builder built it. And when you consider the challenges of getting the materials to where they are, it truly is pretty incredible.
  • The house, my compliments. Wonderful craftsmanship. Looks like an extraordinary life. The secrets simplicity offers many seek in complexity.
  • As someone who is Filipino and had the privilege to experience this type of living as a 'holiday off-grid experience' in several virgin islands in the Philippines.... I honestly give them both props, especially her. Cause if you haven't grown in that environment it's a steep curve to get used to.
  • I absolutely love the Island Life you tube channel. I found it a couple of months ago and was hooked so I binged watched all of their videos. They have a great channel and the husband is so good at what he does. The house they are building is absolutely beautiful. Love watching how they live off grid and they are a beautiful couple. Great video!❤❤

Amazing house, and what an ideal combination of a quiet life and surfing! I've surfed at Lombok about 12 years ago, and I still dream about going back to experience more of the Indonesian islands. You guys are living the dream 😊
  • Wow now that is what you call really living of the grid. Liking the new house. Wishing you both good health and happiness. Thank you Matt and Danielle ❤❤

OMG I thought this was going to be one of those faux off the grid vids with people who have money but act like they’re roughing it….this is absolutely beautiful, inspiring and actually I’m jealous lol 😂😂😂😂 blessings to these two souls…..I love this so much, and LOVE that you have pets/animals
  • @markdowney620
Soo envious, amazing place great being self sufficient catching your own food being in nature and the quite simple life, nice 👍🏻
  • @jeroberts7228
That is definitely an impressive lifestyle, with so much useful knowledge of generations past being put to use, as well. Not an easy lifestyle, but one that's wonderfully connected to nature in many ways. I wish the best for them, always!
