When our Field Officer Becky Bedson attended a site after a concerned member of the public phoned our Welfare Line, she found a very large group of horses near the M25 in need of help as the owners were unable to cope.

Becky and fellow Field Officer Chris Shaw worked hard to gain the owners’ cooperation and in due course a multi-agency operation took place to remove the horses and other animals found on the property to safety. 11 horses came into the care of our Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre and another 21 to our Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre. The vast majority of these horses were completely unhandled and very nervous, with numerous health problems.

Our Welfare Line receives thousands of calls each year from people concerned about horses.

  • Such a sad situation to get into. It is obvious that the original horses were well bred but the owners let things get way out of hand. There are some amazing looking projects in this group for the right person. It's another example of people not gelding animals and letting mares reproduce time and time again. Great work from WHW and partner agencies.
  • Thank goodness these horses have finally been helped. Driven past the site for years. Hopefully the owners have been prosecuted for neglect so that in a few years time the same situation does not reoccur.
  • U guys do an amazing job I want horses when I'm older and I want most to be rescued
  • Well done on such a sensitive rescue. The horses in your care have really landed on their feet, you guys are so wonderful. Thank you for all you're doing.
  • Well Done All 👏 Serious legislation is needed carrying v heavy fines & jail time. It's not fair on these beauties
  • Finally something has been done! This site has been like this for years & years! I used to pass this site every day/night as I'm a lorry driver & always used to look across to this area wondering when something would be done?! I had called another rescue centre numerous times but nothing ever seemed to be done. I hope they checked the water area's/fenced areas next to the motorway? I saw one stuck in one patch before but nothing ever done 😕
  • Rescuing is much better than buying. There's so many need good homes! All our horses or at least most of them have been rescued. The two remaining are a Friesian X Thoroughbred who's mother was rescued by my mother and who gave birth after she was rescued and Mum took a little Shetland home from the same place and unfortunately our stallion Tyson (also a rescue who we had for years and sadly lost to grass sickness) covered her and she had Blossom. Both the mum's have since passed on but got to live their old ages without being separated from their last foals. Our dogs are always rescues as are my cats. We also feed and treat foxes for mange and back home in Scotland, the woodland left to us on the death of our parents (no money lots of trees lol!) has been maintained to support indigenous wildlife and plants/trees. We try to do our bit to reduce our footprints too.
