This was my mom’s music! She was a big fan of a television show called The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, they were the Nelsons and they had two sons, David (oldest) and Ricky the singing heartthrob. They were a real family! Sadly he died in 1985 in a plane crash at the age of 45! He has a daughter, Tracy, who’s an actress! His sons, Matthew and Gunner Nelson (twins) followed in his footsteps and had some hits in their band, Nelson, in the nineties! ❤

Ricky Nelson had an interesting history! His father, Ozzie, was a band leader in the 30's and 40's, his mother, Harriet, was their singer. Ozzie helped develop a radio show, then a tv show based on their family, called 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet', in which Ricky and his brother David played themselves, from the time they were 9 and 12 years old (the radio show then the tv show ran for over 20 years) People came to know the family more as sitcom actors than for their substantial musical backgrounds. But lo and behold, Ricky could sing, play instruments, and was really good looking. Ricky had talented children in both acting and music as well.

Garden Party is a great one by Ricky Nelson - it’s from his later years and reflects on his past, his change as a musician, and people’s reactions in his later years.

Love this song. Ricky Nelson & Dean Martin were in a John Wayne movie where they both sang. "Rio Bravo" If ever you Jay & Amber, will want to watch a western. That's a great to watch for Movie Monday,Friday or whenever
  • I cried hard when Ricky Nelson passed away. He had twin sons Gunnar and Matthew Nelson...they have a rock group, they call themselves "Nelson" and one of their big hits is "(Can't Live Without Your) Love & Affection" from 1990.

Song written by Gene Pitney who was himself from that era. Listen to his "It Hurts to Be In Love," "Only Love Can Break a Heart," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," "Town Without Pity," etc. all great songs.
  • In the first wave of rock ‘n’ roll, 1955 to 1963, Ricky Nelson was the second biggest record cellar only behind Elvis. His TV show with his parents, adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, with a perennial head for 17 years on television. He had to number one hits, traveling man and poor little fool. He had dozens of top 10 hits. Rock ‘n’ roll historians credit him for making rock ‘n’ roll acceptable to middle America. He first ventured into rock ‘n’ roll when he was 16 and dressed up as Elvis on an episode of Ozzie and Harriet for Halloween. He sang a song on the show, I seem to remember it as being, I’m walking, and the response was overwhelming. His father, being a very smart businessman, put together a band for him and made sure that his newest single was featured on the TV show before it came out. He was a child actor he started on his parents radio show and then later was in movies before he was 12. So before American bandstand, or any other show, he was the first continuously teenage idol shown to America. Bob Dylan famously said that Ricky Nelson was the most underrated performer in rock ‘n’ roll history.

I am somewhat amazed that few people today have even heard of Ricky Nelson. Beyond the fists full of Billboards Top tens and millions of records sold, he was TV royalty. His family’s show was on TV from 1952 to 1966. His adult life was controversial, and involved many well known celebrities. I am glad that you are primed to go down the Nelson rabbit hole. The songs might be simple and lyrics naive, but there’s something catchy about them. I cherish my Ricky Nelson’s Million Sellers albums as much as any music recordings I bought over several decades.

Teen idol of his time his song “Poor little fool” with Elvis background singers the Jordanaires is a must hear. His other popular song is The Garden Party where he briefly sings about how fans said he didn’t look the same as he got older.
  • @PickleBoot_Arts
There were two singers from early rock and roll who never appeared on American Bandstand: Elvis and Rick Nelson. Elvis never had to, but Nelson had his own TV show to sing on: the sitcom Ozzie and Harriet.
  • @LBinsocal
Finally, Ricky was the only guy giving Elvis competition in the early days of rock.. He has so many other great songs… can’t wait to hear more reactions of him.

Ricky Nelson is the only artist to have a number one song, number one movie and number one TV show in the same week. My favourite Ricky Nelson song is “It’s Up To You”.

"Rio Bravo" (1959) western with several big names of the day, including Ricky Nelson as a young "gunslinger" Dean Martin as an overly drinking local, Walter Brennan as the crippled old man, and the legendary John Wayne as the sheriff who enlists the other three to help him ward off a jail breakdown from a prisoner's relatives. High critical and audience ratings for this movie-channel winner. Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickinson each nominated for best new actor and actress accordingly. Need to see it.
  • @bluesman3232
The legendary James Burton on lead guitar and later went on to play in Elvis' band.
  • Ricky Nelson was a big star. A couple of movies, a sitcom, and a surprising number of hit songs!
  • Ricky Nelson had many hits, my personal favourite is, "Lonesome Town", others, "Travellin' Man", "Garden Party", "Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You)", "Never Be Anyone Else But You", "Poor Little Fool", "I'm Walkin'", "She Belongs to Me", "I Will Follow", "Stood Up", "Sweeter Than You". There are many more but these are some good ones to start with.

A beautiful man (literally), inside and out who left us far too soon. Truly a first teen idol to a near bygone generation who grew up watching him star alongside his real life family in a sitcom television show, spanning out on his own with a successful singing career.

My grandma's name was Mary Lou, and she loved this song. We always knew of this as her song. She would keep her car radio tuned to a station that played songs from this era, and she would always turn it up when this song came on.
