OH man I had no idea they made this into an anime! IS a good story. Even back with the manga I always thought it was so stupid to get rid of the guy who could totally LOCK DOWN a group of enemies coming at you, heck that isn't even counting the other powers he has. I never got far enough in the manage but my theory was that they feared people with his power in their world because it becomes so OP. I mean yeah being a hero and having insane powers is great but means nothing if you are locked down and can move, are sleep, and poisoned!
