My favorite chain of false friends in Italian: iscriversi means register registrare means record ricordare means remember
  • @francoist1755
Being a native french speaker actually helped me guess pretty much half of these words correctly. Some of these false friends are exactly the same in my language: actuellement, compréhensif, cru, éventuellement, fastidieux, gentil, librairie, préservatif, sensible, sympathique...

This might surprise everyone: here are a pair of false friends between Italian and Vietnamese! - the Italian greeting "ciao" happens to look and sound like the Vietnamese greeting "chào" , although there is absolutely no connection between the two. The Italian one comes from the Venetian expressive adverb "s-ciavo", as in "your humble servant"; while the Vietnamese one simply comes from a Chinese word for "morning" , where the logic for the latter implies "good morning". - the Italian word "ma" is both the conjunction word "but" as well as an emphatic interjection ; Vietnamese also has a word "mà" , while coincidentally also means "but" and also used in an emphatic statement! Once again, there is no connection: the Italian "ma" is equivalent to the French "mais".

Desidero qualcuno che mi guardi come Alan guarda Marco. ❤ (complimenti per il video, idea geniale e davvero molto utile, sia per chi vuole imparare l'inglese e per chi l'italiano, grande Marco!)

I love false friends, I almost wrote an MA thesis on those. :D They're so fun to trace. Sometimes they just sound similar, but they have different etymology (like English embarrassed and Italian imbarazzo vs. Spanish embarazada which means pregnant, one is from Latin, and Spanish from Arabic via Portuguese). Sometimes they have actually same etymology, but meaning changed along the way (like education is used that way since 17 century, before that it was also about child rising and manners). Yep, very fun topic. :D

When going on vacation to Italy from American, the way to remember that the water tap labelled C is hot is to think cauldron. Hot like a boiling cauldron.
  • @Luboman411
"Actualmente" in Spanish also means "presently," like in Italian. "Caldo" in Spanish is "hot soup." But in Italian it just means "hot."
  • @Sun-Tzu-
Nearly all.of these come from the same root words. You can work most of them out. Like "crude" does also mean "raw", like when used in "Crude oil".
  • Nice video guys. I am learning Italian and is awesome to learn having fun. Abbraccio grande per voi ragazzi🤗
  • @sophiaelric2794
Knowing French and Spanish really helps when you're trying to guess the word's actual meaning. I didn't expect it - should've, really, but I didn't so it was pretty cool!
