Sorting the Dursleys in to Hogwarts Houses - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Hogwarts, the sorting hat, the house system and some of the muggle characters from then series. More specifically, I’m going to be assigning the unassigned- placing Vernon and Petunia Dursley in to the Hogwarts houses that I see fit. In a previous standalone video I sorted Dudley, so if you haven’t seen that then go and check it out, but today I’m going to be discussing his parents.

Now- sorting occurs at the sorting ceremony- an annual tradition at Hogwarts that falls at the beginning of the school year. The function of the ceremony is to assign new students to one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Students are sorted using the Sorting hat, a sentient hat that once belonged to Hogwarts Founder Godric Gryffindor.

Recognizing that they each valued very different traits in students, hence the rationale for having 4 houses in the first place, each founder passed on the main criteria for their particular house to the hat. The student then places the hat on their head, and is assigned to a house based on which founder they resemble most.

When Harry’s parents were murdered on Oct 31st 1981, the decision was made that Harry would be raised by his aunt Petunia and her family. Part of the reasoning for this was that Harry would remain protected by his mother’s loving sacrifice, so long as he could still call the Dursley residence home. Furthermore, the life of fame and fortune that Harry was destined to have may not have been a good start to the young boys life. So where did he go instead? A place where he couldn’t have been treated any less famous - the Dursley residence.

The Dursley family was comprised of Vernon (the father), Petunia (the mother) and Dudley (the son). Though they hated any and all things magical, and were perhaps the antithesis of the sort of family that should adopt Harry, they were the safest option. However, while Harry was certainly ‘safe’ from the Dursleys, at least from a physical standpoint, it was not a good environment to grow up in.

They were always massively critical of Harry and certainly didn’t like anything that was out of the ordinary- a tall order when you’ve adopted a magical young boy. They showed blatant favouritism toward their actual son- Dudley, forced Harry to live in a cupboard under the stairs, tried to prevent him from attending HOGWARTS, and always hid his past from him. So, to which house do these monsters belong?

  • I was thinking that Petunia would be sorted into Hufflepuff because of her desire to study at Hogwarts and how hard she worked to keep her house clean but your reasoning for her being placed in Griffindore is good too.

I wonder how Dudley’s parents would have reacted if he was magical
  • @SquirrelASMR
Dudley was brave. He literally bullied a wizard kid that could kill him in horrible ways and set snakes on him. Either hes brave or an idiot.

Suggestion: origin of transportation in the Wizarding world (floo powder, brooms, apperating ect.)
  • Hufflepuff because Petunia was still loyal to her sister when Lily's accidental magic began and even years later when Lily died she still took in Harry even if it is begrudgingly. She was also willing to work hard in her studies to be accepted at Hogwarts. I think she also had a bit of the other's houses traits.

I understand slytherin house has produced dark wizards. However, me personally, I think “modern” slytherins are tolerant towards other world views. I’d classify Vernon as a pre-war slytherin whose intolerant. Other houses can produce mean-spirited wizards as well. Hufflepuff would be a nice fit for him because he is hard working, but as you said Vernon wants successful outcomes no matter the consequences.

3:46 I just realized that face Vernon looks like Tim Allen’s Toy Santa from Santa Clause 2 😂

I love how he keeps repeating what something is. Such as, explaining to us what the Sorting Hat is supposed to do, and what classes there are at Hogwarts, even though most of us already know what’s up. I still love it.

Petunia is totally a Hufflepuff for the fact that she is so complex, and has so many different characteristics displayed in each house. That is exactly what Hufflepuff is about. In the first book during the sorting hat song he says Hufflepuff was about teaching the lot (meaning anyone with all abilities/who didn't fit the other founder's mold)
  • @LivesInHerBooks
Omg Petunia your childhood dream of going to hogwarts has come true, sort of....YEYYY
  • I think an interesting video would be about what would happen to Voldemort or Death Eaters if they tried to attack Harry while he was still living at Private drive. Would said DE or Voldemort be able to enter number 4? Would any curse aimed at the house be deflected back at the caster? Would it alert Dumbledore or a member of the order who would then immediately apparate to that location to investigate or defend the Dursley's and Harry?
  • "You have to be somewhat brave to be in Gryffindor" Peter Pettigrew: ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT
  • Best thumbnail ever. That’s my only sentence to describe the thumbnail.
  • @oxlet7942
10 years after the film ended and he’s still making videos for us!legandary I really enjoy the videos keep it up!!
  • Petunia was probably flattered that she finally had some kind of magical power through her own blood that she could use, albeit that it was only because of Lily, which she probably resented. Vernon would've been a Hufflepuff, I think. Look at all the things he installed himself to keep Harry in! He did all the driving, he worked hard at his job. I guess you could argue that the ambition was his driving force. The hat would probably waver between the two. I think Petunia was a Gryffindor too. It takes a lot of guts to hide someone in your house who you know would be a possible focus for a violent serial killer/mass murderer (essentially) and psychotic and cruel at that, and who would kill her and her whole family without blinking an eye, or perhaps even torture them in horrible ways they couldn't even dream of....I don't know if I could do it (I like to think I would but curiously, once you have a child of your own, your attitudes change in ways you can't imagine. Honest to God).
  • @peestrem31
love the thumbnail, could you do more theories on grindelwald too?
  • @karlbergen6826
The problem with being in Skytherin is that your imaginary Vernon is Muggle-born and it is unusual. I would put Petunia in Gryffindor. I think had she not married Vernon she would have treated Harry much better.

Late night ridiculousness that comes from this great channel 👍❤️
