10 Gut Problems CAUSED By Thyroid Disease

Published 2022-04-26
Did you know that your gut and your thyroid are connected? If you have a problem with one you will almost always have a problem with the other.

Your thyroid helps to control how quickly your gut moves and how much stomach acid you produce. When your thyroid is low it slows down how quickly your intestines move and lowers how much stomach acid you produce.

The result? Constipation, overgrowth of bacteria, acid reflux, and a reduction in absorption of key nutrients.

The relationship between your thyroid and your gut is more complicated than this, though, as gut problems can also lead to thyroid problems. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which came first which is why treating your gut is always a great idea.

Here is a list of 10 gut issues that thyroid patients frequently suffer from:
#1. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
#2. Small intestinal fungal overgrowth.
#3. GERD or acid reflux.
#4. Decreased kinetic bowel movement or gastroparesis.
#5. Low stomach acid.
#6. H. pylori infections.
#7. Malabsoprtion.
#8. Celiac disease.
#9. Gallstones.
#10. Autoimmune gastritis.

The key to fixing your thyroid is often a combination of treating BOTH your gut and your thyroid at the same time. Because thyroid disease can perpetuate gut dysfunction it's always necessary to optimize thyroid function either with natural treatments or with thyroid medication.

But doing both things at the same time is almost always the best approach.

Do you have gut problems and thyroid problems? Do you think they are connected?

  • I jumped the gun & had my thyroid removed. I went down the You Tube Rabbit Hole doing Research, because like (it seems) everyone else, the Doctors I was going to didn't know squat about the Endocrine system. After Keto, intermittent fasting I finally started to lose the weight (all while my Primary Care Manager was playing yoyo with my Synthroid Meds). I was still in Agony- I thought that my Prior lower back injury was making me immobile. I finally had an MRI, only to have the Report from the Imaging Lab write a small blurp about my Bile duct being backed up. Then I stumbled on Dr Childs Video about Ox Bile. I tried it. I also started taking a gallbladder supplement along with the Ox Bile. My Back stopped hurting. I was more regular than I had ever been in my life. So, If you have these symptoms too, I Hope my Experience Might just help You- Good Luck!

Thank you. This helped me understand my health issues going back 30 years. Cheers
  • Do you have a video on how to get your gut healthier so your thyroid medication works better?
  • Dr Childs, I sincerely hope you would train doctors in Australia about the care of patients with thyroid issues and post total thyroidectomy. You have an enormous amount of knowledge which needs to be shared and passed onto others for the care and treatment of patients. Please consider this for us whom are unable to find appropriate care. Thank you for your knowledge

Hey doc. I’ve been having stomach issues for over a year starting from the day after my full thyroidectomy. It only got worse, and after finally finding a doctor somewhat willing to listen, he took my labs and put me on a higher dosage of levothyroxine and the day I started the new dosage my stomach was better like back to normal! Thank you so much for all your help! This is all life changing info! ❤️
