This is 2020 BMW 750Li, and it meets its grandfather, the E38 2001 740i, which costs far less and is rear wheel drive. Both are V8s, and both are BMW flagships of their time. But can the old one stack up, and is the new one worth the massive premium? James and Thomas jump behind the wheel of both to experience them and discuss them inside and out. Watch and enjoy. "If you can afford the new one ... just ask the dealer for a 4% discount and you could get both"

can’t believe how good the E38 still looks

“...and it has 1000 times more turbos, plus two” quick maffs

I can't wait to see how the new 7 series will hold up in like 20 years. I doubt it will even do that...

“Ask the dealer for a 4% discount and you can get both” such a good way to end the video 😂😂😂😂
  • These guys really gel well together, they are the ying and yang, Canadian & British. Its obvious they spend alot of time researching the cars they are going to review, like James looking up what the BMW online forums thought and wrote about the 7 series in 2001! I think these two are the top of their game with their channel, all the best for 2021! Matt from Sydney
  • I just bought a 2001 740iL for a thousand US dollars. I knew nothing about it. It's a very nice car, terribly fast, great suspension, it fits me well. I love it. Great video guys

The ideal 7 series would look like the old one and have all the tech of the new one. That old 7 series must be one of the best looking sedans ever made.

The fact you mentioned Tomorrow Never Dies right off the bat, this is already fantastic

I drove a 1988 7 series with 200k on the clock a few years ago and I was so surprised on what a comfortable and sporty drive it was. It was so well put together you could feel it in the drive, the seats, the suspension, the buttons.. everything. Though my Mazda 3 is much newer and has more technology, for a drive the bmw was a better ride and 30 years older. It made my Mazda 3 drive, look and feel cheap lol plus I also don’t think my Mazda would last or stay in as good of condition as the bmw has for 30 years

i love the styling on that 2001. my favorite bimmer for a long time, its so sleek and timeless
  • The E38 might be old, but it will go down as one of the best looking sedans of all time

5:09 I can in fact say that steering wheel is the E39 5 series M sport steering wheel. However the 7 did get a 3 spoke steering wheel, it just looked a bit different. Also I’m in agreement with most of the comment section that I prefer the E38 over the new generation. I own one currently and it has over 242k miles on it. My dad’s E38 has 320k miles on it. BMWs of this era could never hit that kind of mileage without needing serious engine or transmission work. I’ve even driven the new 7 and even though it has more power, it just doesn’t compare to the old one. The E38 is just way more planted to the ground and you feel like you’re getting an actual driving experience when the new 7 just feels way too floaty. EDIT: Hold on, they said the E38 went 0-60 in 6.8? Almost everywhere I’ve looked I’ve seen 5.9 for the 740i. I don’t think they were correct on that regard.

Love this before and after comparisons. Favorite one so far is Lexus LS then and now. Keep up the good work guys.

Coming soon : Horse carriage vs S class
  • In 20 years, let's see if the new 7 series looks as elegant and good as the E38. I suspect that we already know the answer.
  • @Antonjag23
I will always regret selling my E38. Best car ever made, i will argue all day
  • Late 90s and early 00s were so good for BMW design, there's E46 3-series, E39 5-series, E38 7-series and Z8, all look stunning
