"In the Air Tonight" first appeared on Collins' 1981 solo album Face Value. Released as a single in the United Kingdom in January 1981, the song was an instant hit, quickly climbing to No. 2 on the UK Singles chart. It was also an international hit peaking at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1981 and number 1 in the Netherlands. It was later certified Gold by the RIAA representing 500,000 copies sold. The track remains one of Collins' best-known hits. The song's music video directed by Stuart Orme received heavy play on MTV when the new cable music video channel launched in August 1981.

    That opening bass, the walk...the slowwww pressure, knowing, what's coming, the anticipation: controlled. We all know what's coming, we're all waiting for it... Phil walks the stage probably counting every step to get through to the steps and to those drums. Awesome prep performance. And then the moment comes......Ecstasy if you love this...I don't know who can't love this.

    This live version blows away the studio version! It's so atmospheric. When he reaches the drum kit & plays that drum part like the expert he is, the audience goes nuts! FANTASTIC!!!!

    This was my grandpa’s favorite song in the world. Every where he went people knew him and gravitated to him. Loved by many. I remember him blaring it when I was younger. I miss you I love grandpa. ❤
