'Twas the Night Before Fictionmas | Writing Life | Author Life | Writing Struggles

Twas the night before Fictionmas
when all through the house
Only a writer was stirring and starting to grouse
The plot was all outlined but in need of some flair
In hopes that saint publishing soon would be there
The protagonist was nestled all snug in her head
with conflicts and character arcs that were already half dead.

Those tropes in her story and POV gaps had just settled in for a long backstory trap.
When on social media there appeared such a clatter
She scrolled through her feed to learn about the whole matter.
Away from her manuscript she just knew was slapdash
she opened all the browsers and avoided the word mash.

Facebook and TikTok apps began to glow
Gave luster to avoiding a wordy chapter too slow
When what to her wondering eyes should appear
but a miniature epiphany and nine fiction muses with successful careers.

With new subplots and pivot points it all came so quick
She knew in moment it all began to click.
More rapid than amazon algorithms the ideas came
And she typed and tapped and called them by name.

Now pacing, now dialogue, now tension and diction
On conflict, on showing, on genre and fiction.
To the end of the chapter, to the end of this tale
Now write away , write away, the plot must prevail.

✅ Are you struggling with creating characters or showing vs telling? I discuss this and more in my masterclass,
The Power of Archetype & Write a More Masterful Sentence

A great story has great characters. Memorable characters that leap from the page do more than just entertain. The reader relates and learns from them. Discover how to create believable and nuanced characters that drive plot and enhance conflict by teasing out all the strengths and weaknesses found in archetypes.

There are many ways to tell a story and even more ways to write the scenes and sentences within. An ordinary sentence may move the plot forward, but a masterful sentence or scene does so much more! A purpose-driven scene enhances mood, tone, characterization, conflict, plot, theme, and emotion. Discover the author techniques and literary devices to create evocative and layered prose that transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

This course provides both a literary and real-life approach to:
• characterization
• archetypes
• authorial techniques
• literary devices
that will help you master the art of ‘showing vs telling’.
