Imagine a mantis trying to explain that hes not creepy for staring at you. He's just always staring at everything.

That "Doesn't mean it isn't watching" gave me chills.
  • The mantis isn't tracking you... Or is it? Vsauce music plays
  • @ytkatz
Honestly, the fact that they're watching everything, ALL the time is more terrifying than following me around.

Love that they recognized someone’s fear, broke it down into science, and then reinforced it again 😂
  • Ok, the practical explanation with straws was genius move.
  • That was a fantastic explanation, thank you! Mantises are awesome, and I love the interaction they give by following you with their head, they are so highly visual.
  • The way that they turn their heads to look at you just gives them so much personality compared to most insects.
  • So if I'm on the left and a friend is on the right, its eyes would appear to be both looking to the left and right directly at each of us. Neat
  • I always loved the fact that praying mantises had "pupils" that looked around at you. It made their faces expressive in a way other bug faces aren't.
  • It's never creeped me out, I have, do and always will be adorable 🥰

The straws explanation is the best example you could've used!

Fantastic analogy with the straws! Brilliant. You’re such a great educator. ❤
  • I love mantids, they're such neat bugs! Always excited when I get to see one in the wild
  • That was such a good way of explaining how the pseudo-pupil works. I never really thought about how it follows you around, but the straws made me understand immediately!
  • 1. I’ve always thought the praying mantis is one of the coolest creatures on the planet. 2. Terrifying & beautiful at the same time.
