I commuted from Tilehurst to Paddington from 1966 to 1969. My morning "up" at 7:18 was hauled by Hymek, Western or Brush Type 4. Evening return was similar, but also Lion and Falcon.
  • Travelled quite a few times behind Warships or Westerns between Reading and Plymouth back in the late 60s! Loved the sound they made.
  • I do like the western and warship class excellent well shot as well .👍🏻
  • Now that's what I call proper Train Sounds🎼🎵🚂 from The Hymeks and Westerns along with Warships ❤️Feels like going back to the late 1960s or Early 1970s with Classic traction power like this❤️💕
  • Having grown up by the Paddington main line, those Maybach sounds are drilled into my subconscious; few things sound so glorious as a Western giving it "the beans"... Always had a soft spot for the Hymeks and Warships, though. Lovely video.
  • Heard a Western leaving Totnes in the early 70 's with the engine note getting higher and higher. Quite unlike any other diesel.
  • Absolutely great, thats really good music ! Especially the V16 in Hymeks, displacement is and will always be displacement :-) Best regards from south Germany

Thanks for the great clips. Brings back happy memories of standing at Maidenhead station as these great diesels passed through.

That is really nice. My favourite is the western class 52. Nice to see the warships in action as well.

Wonderful! Could not mistake Minehead 1:51. The times I stood there in the 70s in front of the 'Flockton Flyer'. 12:35 is spectacular. I have a Warship Hornby model from the 70s but I never saw one or a Western at full clag!!! 16:35 is fantastic too!! All the insides lit up. Such a beast of a machine!
  • Wow, here I sit, at sixty six years of age, in America, watching this video and reminiscing about how I used to go down to Gloucester sheds and check out what was stationed there. Some fifty five years have flown by and this video brings back the memories. The Westerns were quite common, but I had to go to King’s Cross (I think !) to see the Deltics. Wonderful, powerful stuff.

Love the musical sound track! Maybach music indeed! It must be nice, when you're using somebody elses money, to say"non standard" and "scrap them," when the warships still had years of life and the westerns and hymeks could could have lasted a decade or two!
  • Couple of years ago I heard that a 52 class was part of the minhead line so as not to far I tracked it down , forget we’re the restore them but found the village were they keep stock and a very kind guy took us into the workshop and showed me around campaigner , she was having the drive box restored think that’s what they were doing , she has lots of rust worm in places but nothing that can’t be sorted I’m sure , if I had money ide donate to get her looking great , these locos when I was a child scared the living @##*out of me and the sound to , isn’t it funny how the things you once feared becomes the thing you love in later life , in a few day ile be 58 , may these beasts keep rolling 👍😉
