Turing-Roche Translational Science Methods Club: Casual Inference

Published 2023-11-29
The Translational Science Methods Club event series is a project led by Sarah Buehler as part of the Turing-Roche Community Scholar Scheme which you can find out more about here: www.turing.ac.uk/events/translational-science-meth…

This is a recording of the first session of the Methods Club held on November 27th 2023, focusing on the topic of Causal Inference and applications of such methods in industry and academic research.

This session featured Sarah Buehler, currently a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL, as the host and discussion moderator, as well as two speakers: Sarah McGough, Principal Data Scientist at Roche and Leah Pirondini, Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

In the first talk Sarah introduces how causal inference is applied in drug development research when randomized clinical trial data are unavailable, focusing on a recent application in cancer. In the second talk, Leah discusses causal inference methods for estimating longitudinal, time-dependent treatment effects in the presence of time-dependent confounding, using routinely-collected health data, with a focus on mechanical ventilation strategies for COVID-19 intensive care patients.
