Harris to bring VP pick to Triangle next Thursday

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to come to the Triangle for a campaign visit next week, and she’s expected to bring her running mate with her. WRAL News learned that Harris will stop in the Triangle for a campaign rally on Aug. 8, where she will bring her presumptive running mate. The New York Times earlier Tuesday reported that Harris would stop in North Carolina, as well as Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Details about the Raleigh visit were not immediately available.

Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden said he would not run for reelection on Sunday, July 21.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper was on a short list of possible running mates, but he removed himself from contention on Monday.

While the vice president’s team began the search for a running mate by seeking vetting materials from a dozen people, just five are said to remain in serious consideration Mark Kelly of Arizona; Govs. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Tim Walz of Minnesota and Andy Beshear of Kentucky; and Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.
