I had rats, and they’re actually a really clean option for small spaces!! Unfortunately it sounds like the kids may not be deep cleaning regularly. Shavings and linens should only need to be changed around twice a week, but a weekly deep clean is really the only way to deal with the smell. Just like a litter box. I hope this helps ❤
  • Quick reminder: if your rat cage smells you’re not cleaning it often enough

I’d strongly recommend removing the plexiglass as that can harbor bacteria. Rats should have free flowing air through the full enclosure. Also poop needs to be cleaned daily along with any spoiled food/blankets removed everyday and full cleaning of entire enclosure once a week at least.
  • I can smell it from here 🤢 That plexi glass is trapping all the gunk in there, the rats need fresh airflow.
  • Those rats are going to get so sick from that plexiglass restricting air flow

Y’all know it smell wild in that camper 💀
  • @cerena
The plexiglass is a HUGE no-no. But i bet they will ignore that comment like they do every other time another experienced rat owner comments the same thing.

Now imagine how the rats feel living in that filth. The plexiglass needs to be removed so that they have a flow of fresh air. If there is a smell then you are not cleaning often enough! Stop being cruel. Either take care of the rats properly or rehome them.
  • This cage needs a functional make over. If you can remove the middle wire rack, that would help alot, instead of two floors you can give them a large jungle gym with hammocks and ledges and whatever you can find to make bridges, this way they will have less places to do their business and they will get some workouts too. Your bedding needs to be something more absorbent and natural smelling for the urine, rat urine is not healthy to live with. Use a rock for the potty to keep them going there to pee instead of anywhere they want to. Water near the potty, food at the top, make the forage. And instead of the glass use towels to protect your walls. They are breathable, absorbant, can be washed and can double as a chew toy. I hope these tips help, they have helped me alot. I accidentally got 15 rats when I was young and stupid and it was not pretty.
  • You NEED to listen to the advice in your comments. This is unacceptable. PLEASE rehome them if you’re not going to properly care for them. They don’t deserve to suffer. 😣

these people removed the whole bathroom so their oldest kid could have rats 😂
  • it smels because plexiglass decreases ventillation which can cause eye issues and respiratory issues in your rats
  • Everyone has been telling y’all to remove the plexiglass ! I think you guys should listen to others with experience with rats.
  • Rat poop contains a lot of bad stuff and can hurt lungs in people if in a contained room with no ventilation. I would remove the glass. I really don’t have a problem with any other rv family but this family really upsets me and they just keep doing things that are dumb
  • Here are some tips that I know So when you clean out the cage most of the rats scent is gone so they feel they have to get their smell back by going to the bathroom more. What you can do is save a little bit of the the dirty bedding and mix it with the new bedding. Rats can be litter trained and there’s lots of videos on that too. I recommend picking up their poop daily. And for smell, there is lots of products for that but just remember they need to be pet safe! Rats have very delicate immune systems and you need to be careful. They seem happy! Love your videos!
  • The ammonia and bacteria that’s probably festering for 1.5 months has to be out of control
  • my father let me get rats when i was 16 and it was the biggest regret of my life. his as well.
