Excellent stuff. I was going to do a quick video myself, but looks like ya beaten me to it. Lucky for me, I ordered Two of the UV-5RH here in the U.K just before the prices shot up. I was very impressed with the specifications. Although marked up on the front panel as BF-5RH. I am not sure which versions they are, and am still experimenting to find out what are the frequency ranges actually available both RX & TX ranges. it does seem to be more than advertised. Although of course the sets should? conform to the appropriate standards for the relevant country in which they are sold, but I consider it a bonus. I have several Baofeng radios in my collection, including the original UV-5R. I was happy to see the return of the VFO/MR & A/B buttons which had been discontinued on the UV82 & some later sets. Very impressed with the AM aircraft reception, which is good as my Icom set. Unlike the Quansheng UV-K5 on which it claims is AM but barely audible.

I ordered the Baofeng UV-5RH. What I got was UV-5RM. It is a unlocked radio. I only use it on the Ham frequencies. So I am very surprised. I believe the 5RH was a test radio. It comes out as the 5RM when the bugs are fixed. Currently for sale on Amazon.
  • The two Baofeng are outside very similar but inside are very different. The UV-5RH with airband mount a Beken 4819 RF Circuit that permit to receive frequency from 18Mhz to 1200Mhz (Firmware Limited) same the Quansheng. The UV-5RH without Airband mount an AT1846S RF Circuit that receive only from 136Mhz to 470Mhz. The limits of two radios are in hardware, not only software. If you want to see the version of your hardware press 8 and keep pressed and power on your radio so you can see the Chip Version.

Does Unlocking work on the GMRS Version of this Radio called the UV-5G Plus???
  • @JohnDoe-zg6fn
My 5RM came unlocked. I have 70c, 2m, 1.25, Air, GMRS/FRS. I have used it to connect to other radios and it worked on all the bands with no issues.

If you upload a copy of the programming with an air frequency through the software, will it be possible that another tri band can be unlocked? Sorry for my english i use google translate
  • @JimBiddle.
Just ordered one of these Tri-Band radios from your Baofeng link, hopefully they haven't seen this and limited them!

Hello, can you tell me if we can unlock this device to have the entire band from 18 to 1300 MHz like on the quansheng UV-K5? Are there any modified firmware? thank you 73 Did F4CEW
  • Newbie here. Which model: 1 or 2 is better to monitor the communication in case of war or emergency SHTF? I read the info on their website but can't decide which model to choose? Confusing.
  • On what way can i get the most range out of this? Did a test in frequentie mode and gave the same distance as the uv5r i have.
  • @IgorDavid
Hi, how are we with this ? can it be done via programming cable ? I mean can we hack uv5rh to receive hairband? thanks
  • Woah! This is awesome. I just got a 5RH, and was told that the 5RM was better because it can receive airbands. I was planning on returning the radio for the 5RM, but this video makes me think I don’t need to. Is there any advantages to the 5RM over the 5RH?
  • @hoggif
I just got a couple UV-5RH's from China and they also transmit on 200MHz band as well as receives air band. It was sold as having airband but no mention of tri-band transmit. I've not checked if power is ok at 200MHz band because it is not used in my country anyway.

The radio has 999 memories. Does the menu allow the user to separate them into smaller banks are are they in one big bank?
  • @dolphen26
The circuit board on the V2 with no airband is different from the ones with airband. I guess there won´t be an upgrade to fix it, unfortunately.
  • @horvisnone4997
What the? Since when does the Baofeng UV-5R have a color display?
  • @lambda7652
Has someone seen a teardown? would like to see what chipset and hardware they use.

Hello. Through a web search, I have watched your video. I wonder why my UV-5RH can't listen to an air band. I can't go down under 136Mhz. Please let me know your firmware information. FYI, My UV-5RH is "Firmware: V0.07 and Hardware: V01". I really appreciate any help you can provide. =)
