How to make a Canvas Stretcher & Re Stretch a Painting

Published 2018-02-03
I make a new canvas stretcher for a painting that's out of square and show how to re stretch a canvas on the new stretcher so it's square and ready for framing.  The painting is by the artist Francis Cunningham, who I consider by painting teacher and mentor and this painted in the done in the Primer Coup style and was painted in Sheffield, Massachusetts

A perfectly timed video. I'm about to do this tomorrow. I never knew about the "back bevelling" on the face before. Makes so much sense.
  • @CNTHINGS
Perfect timing! I've got 9 canvases I need to stretch for a client this month so your video helps!

Great tutorial Jon, France's and you do wonderful work. Never been a fan of Art so to speak. But these oil on linen paintings have sparked an interest. Thank You both.
  • 7 degree angle cut to protect actual painting is something I would of not considered....Thanks Jon.......Two thumbs up!!

Great video! I have had problems in the past with stretching canvasses. Sure is a pain to fix!
  • My works too. Used wood prix handbooks and build it with no problems.

Hi Jon. Do you recommend the use of canvas pliers for larger pieces, or would hand stretching be sufficient? I have couple large ones here at the house that are in need of re-stretching and was wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks.

Did you read my mind?? Haha, this one comes just in time! Need to make 3 custom sized canvases next week 👌👌
  • Help I have a half inch deep (sides) canvas painting I need to re-stretch or mount to have 1.5 inch deep stretchers or wood. (to be Gallery Sized depth). Problem: There's not enough "current extra" canvas to wrap around that depth. Any suggestions? how I can salvage and solve this?
  • it's not as artsy as your one but I need to do one of these for a Millennium Falcon canvas, cheers
