I Try Needle Felting.

Remember traveling? 🥺

In this video I try needle felting for the first (and last) time. Am I just bad at it, or do all first attempts look like this?

Regardless, judging by how often I stabbed myself, I think this craft might not be so good for my... health and safety, lol.

Can any of you do needle felting? And does it require more patience then I have? Why was it so hard?? 🥺😳😤

  • Now that you’ve been making more clothes you should retry the “only wearing clothes I made for a week” video.
  • No experience with needle felting but my mum once made a tiny model of our dog out of said dogs fur! Said model proceeded to be eaten by said dog 6 months later.

"It's 10:30pm. That is the most logical time to start a craft project." I feel so called out

I absolutely adore felting! I am self-taught but here are some tips I picked up: Proportions are always tricky to judge, but when in doubt, I always just make the head bigger to give it a more cutesy vibe. Also, keep stabbing! Even when you think you are done, you should stab it some more. Kits usually come with 2 different sized needles: 1. thicker with the ridges spaced apart more (this is used for building the structure of the piece) and 2. thin with the ridges closer to the bottom (gently use this needle when adding details on your piece) . Finally, hairspray is super helpful at the end to stick the flyaway wool down and get a nice pic!
  • I find it so strange when all my favorites on YouTube try needle felting and fail. I love it. It is satisfying and easy.

The subtitle "kazoo plays mournfully" got me giggling

2:18, as a fan of Deadmau5, I screamed 😂 also your panda still looked cute, reminded me more of a sugar glider, which are also cute

Just by looking at the thumbnail and without watching the video I can tell that you just needed to needle felt it for longer. It's a long process to get the pieces as smooth as the example
  • @artisanalie
It's still cute! But oh dear, I feel like there should be a graveyard for all the projects I've started in the middle of the night 😂

For a first try, this was really good! Don't be too harsh on yourself about proportions, they're tough to judge, especially with a new medium like roving. I felted some mushrooms for my wrist pincushion. I think making mushrooms is far easier than animals, because it still looks good even if the proportions aren't quite right. Plus having a tiny mushroom garden to hold my pins is amazing and makes me feel like a magical fairy whenever I sew! I've also tried felting my dog's fur, since she sheds so much (husky), but I have yet to dedicate the time to actually make something good out of it... I plan to make a miniature version of her when next try though.

I went into this being too lazy to turn my phone horizontally and it starts with you saying it's a vertical video. Perfect lol

When I saw the band aids, it made me think of the Threadbanger video, where Rob tries to make a felted bunny XD
  • For your first project that's really good!! My first needle felt project was a daft little penguin who won't stand up, so you've gone one up on me at least.
  • @eqrain21
Annika: Happily cutting roving Me: 😱 I suppose for needle felting it isn't as big a deal but the spinner in me was crying out when I saw that lol.
  • @MammaMia
At least it looks like an actual animal! Certainly good for a first try
  • I did try needle felting once. I used to work for a nationwide US craft chain and they had free demonstrations on Saturday mornings which became my gig because no one else wanted to do it. I was actually excited to find the needle felting kit in my monthly demo box. That lasted roughly 20 minutes into the two-hour demo. I have carpal tunnel and it really made my hands hurt even though I managed not to stab myself with the needle tool. At least I didn't have to spend my own money to find out. There is another kind of felting you might enjoy, though. Knit and crochet items can be felted if they're made of wool. They do shrink, however (which is the point) so practice on things like pillows and purses that you can just use at a smaller size. It's also called "boiled wool" and was a fashion thing in the 80s for jackets. Really. Warm. Jackets.
  • @spidermiss2426
yes but that little thing you made is so much more adorable than the expectation!! I love him.
