An overturned big rig and resulting hazmat situation left motorists stranded in the desert just off the crucial interstate between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and as the situation progresses, concerns about food, water and fuel are increasing. The problem started early Friday morning when a big rig carrying lithium batteries overturned and caught fire.

The crash and resulting fire happened near the Afton Road exit just off the 15 Freeway between Barstow and Baker. I-15, which is the major roadway that connects L.A. and Las Vegas, had been at a virtual standstill for hours.

KTLA's Shelbby Nelson reports on July 27, 2024.

Life pro tip - Don't drive into the desert without food and water.
  • @minxbade
This is why I keep water and canned food in my car.
  • Anyone who was raised in the 80’s in the desert knows to bring extra water, fuel, food and blankets when driving ANYWHERE.
  • This is the fault of CHP and other emergency services. They do not feel the need to direct traffic during an accident. I've seen it happen.
  • @phyxd2670
Passed by this on way back to LA around 3pm. CHP could have handled this much better then they did. They should have started to reroute cars automatically at least 30 miles away.

This makes NO sense at all. Tell people to keep their windows up, turn the air off or put it on recirculate and run them past. - The land is flat enough that they also could have been routed on the dirt or on the opposite side of the highway. This is just absolute insanity.
  • @pauliedweasel
So, did the idiots at the CHP try to t turn the north bound traffic around so they could at least go back to I40 and take to Kingman so they could take 93 north to Vegas?
  • @MB-id3un
If you ever found yourself in this situation ask truckers food, water snacks etc we have full of them in our trucks.
  • Never ever drive or do anything for that fact in the desert without water…. Ever!!!!
  • @jdmack1
Who is the truck driver that caused the crash? That driver needs to be held fully accountable.
  • @ezwriter101
Carry 1 gallon of water per person. If driving thru the desert or remote areas, take 2. But: Flights between So Cal and LV are plentiful. There's no reason to drive if there's an alternative. Check the map apps before you leave.
  • @sr_spongebob
Desperately needs snacks after a few hours😅😂😂😂
  • @MargieM10
Imagine having an infant! Stay prepared, people.
  • @Moondoggy1941
Is the news going to post the gasoline prices on either side of this man made disaster, to make sure they are not going to get gouged. Baker is already expensive enough.
  • @juneyshu6197
They just leave you sit when accidents happen in Calif.
  • @kirkjones9827
A electric car can burn underwater for up to 30 days.
  • Oh my God! the police are idiots, just get the damn box off the road and make the cars go around it. Why do city officials not have people that know what the hell they're doing.
