Prior to this historic interview in December, 1967, Maurice Allan - who was a close friend of mine before I'd ever travelled to the USA - had co-laboured with David Wilkerson as Linda Meissner and Nicky Cruz, led by Wilkerson, set about establishing the first "Teen Challenge" recovery house in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC.

Later in the decade during the 1967 "Summer of Love" in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, Allan, who was an ordained evangelist and accomplished photojournalist, befriended Ted and Liz Wise. (Indeed, it was my friend Maurice Allan who wrote the January, 1968 "Christian Life" cover feature that spread the word about the seeds of the Jesus revolution to mainline churches across north America.) The two characters, Wilkerson and Wise, were poles apart in a rift that even their shared faith in Christ could not heal at the time.

In this San Francisco interview, the traditional rehab preacher (Wilkerson) and the hippie long-haired street preacher (Wise) take the art of mis-communication to a new low.

Just for the record, when KTVU-TV News filmed this piece on December 7th 1967, Wise had been free from drugs for some time. As for Wilkerson, in 1973 he publically apologised for the blinkered attitude toward the long-haired Jesus People that he'd had at the time this interview was filmed. And so, as they say, "they lived happily ever after" - both serving the Lord faithfully until called home by the Jesus whom they both loved. - John E. Ruffle, 6th March, 2023.

RECOVERY OF THIS FOOTAGE:
"In “God’s Forever Family,” author Larry Eskridge relates an incident in which evangelist David Wilkerson (of “The Cross and the Switchblade” fame) filmed leaders of The Living Room mission in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood of San Francisco. A dispute broke out between the proto-Jesus People and Wilkerson over his accusations of false teaching and their charges of Christian legalism and the interview was stopped.

"The Living Room people contended that a TV news crew was also there that day filming Wilkerson, filming the Jesus freaks. Years later Eskridge searched for this footage to no avail. But about a year after 2013’s publication of “God’s Forever Family” the actual footage was posted on a TV archive site hosted by San Francisco State University. In 2017 Anthony Venn-Brown, an Australian author researching a book on Wilkerson, came upon the video and shared it with Eskridge. Here is a long-lost—and quintessentially 1960s—confrontation between the hippie “Street Christians” and “The Establishment” that was aired over KTVU on December 7th, 1967. In addition to David Wilkerson you’ll see the Living Room’s Ted Wise, Steve Heefner, Jim Doop, and Danny Sands. Toward the end of the clip you’ll notice a small, bearded youth on the edge of the scene—that’s Lonnie Frisbee who went on to become an important figure in the early days of the Jesus People movement down at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa."

Here's how others have described this confrontation:
"The Jesus People Movement got its start from a evangelical coffee house in Haight Asbury called The Living Room. Famed Evangelist David Wilkerson came from New York City to interview the hippie preachers, but was disgusted to learn they were smoking weed, were seemingly nonchalant about LSD, yet preaching about Jesus Christ. Wilkerson was able to dry up The Living Room's funding by drawing attention to the drug-friendly lifestyle of these early Jesus People, Ted Wise and Steve Heefner (locally famous as the hippie friendly radio disc jockey moniker "Steve O'Shea"). The movement would spread and become known for founding contemporary worship music, denominations like Calvary Chapel and The Vineyard Churches, and allowing more of a contemporary approach to worship services."

Original 1967 Description:
"KTVU News footage from December 7th 1967 featuring a live debate in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district between Reverend David Wilkerson and four more 'radical' preachers (two are later referred to as "Ted and Steve"), which attempts to focus on the issue of religion and hallucinogenic drugs. However, Wilkerson's first question after the clapperboard is confrontational: "From what I hear, you fellas seem to be telling these young people that they can have Christ and still have their LSD, have their pot." The four men immediately take umbrage with his line of questoning (sic) and retort: "You haven't been listening!"...

  • Many of us who God saved during The Jesus Movement were influenced by David Wilkerson to clean up our lifestyles. I honor the man. And greatly appreciate the wisdom he tried to impart to us. The Jesus Movement was real. But once we got saved we needed spiritual father figures like Brother Wilkerson to help us get on the right track. Thank you David.
  • People pretending to be Christians without paying the price! I miss David Wilkerson. Most preachers today won't even touch these confrontations!
  • No wonder David Wilkerson was so effective. He shows up "all in.". Missing DW right now. Bet he's having a blast in heaven, right now.
  • I was a drug addict and I'm telling you what Jesus Christ saved me from every bit of it yeah I struggled with pot in the beginning but the Lord showed me it was wrong stay sober and stay vigilant cuz we have an adversary the devil and he preys just like a roaring Lion 🦁
  • @obeedoo
Say what you will about DW, he saw tremendous success bringing gang members to the Lord and seeing addicts set free from addiction.
  • You shall know a tree by its fruit. If you confess that you love Jesus, and do evil, you are only deceiving yourself.
  • @KZXten
We have this same deception going on even today. As a true follower of Jesus Christ, we are to be living a life that is honoring to God. Our body as a living sacrifice. This is a daily choice and the Holy Spirit gives us the grace to walk this narrow path.
  • I read the Cross and the Switchblade back when I was a teenager and never forgot it! Very powerful book. That man paid his dues and started Teen Challenge, the most powerful deliverance ministry ever!
  • I truly respect DW! The man had a burden for the lost as well as the church. He was a watchman! His reaching out to Nicky Cruz, a notorious gang leader back in the day, and his subsequent transformation was nothing short of miraculous! He was a modern day Elijah type man of God!
  • My sister was badly addicted to all kinds of drugs, especially pot. Yes, it IS addictive! God set her free completely. He saved and delivers. Bro. Dave knew this. Bro. Dave didn't walk away from people leaving them in bondage if they wanted to be free! I've learned from him since I was a young girl. Now I am older & going silver, & still blessed by Bro.Dave.
  • I’m here after watching the movie “Jesus revolution” and I’m fascinated by the life of Lonnie frisbe which lead me to Ted wise and now to see David Wilkerson my mind is blown! I am noticing more and more disagreements between believers in Christ more than ever so many subjects these days like Women in ministry, deliverance ministry, Calvinism Etc who’s right? Who’s wrong? Are we just different parts of the body with different functions in Christ? A foot 🦶 will disagree with a hand 🤚 if that makes sense. Any how God bless you all and pray for me please as I search for balance and understanding 🙏
  • @bigrich95632
I totally agree with the last guy who was interviewed, what he said was amazing!!!😊
  • @calscottoh
Hebrews 10:26. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
  • @ManuelPinner
Amen! We as Saints must go All the Way with Our LORD Jesus Christ! This was in 1960s and This Shows that the Body in Christ Jesus started back sliding, David Wilkerson was Right about Once We be in Christ Jesus we need to Turn completely away from the ways of this Curse World,
  • Fascinating anectodal video for me; because 5 years later, DW would pray/prophecy over me in Munich, Germany at a revival he held there. Ironically, it was a "Jesus-people" type group I was with (possibly even Teen Challenge itself) that made the caravan trip up from Vienna to see him.
