Alberta gained another 17,000 people from other provinces in Q3 of 2023. Edmonton and Calgary are Alberta's two major cities and many people are trying to decide which one is going to be best for them.

In this video, we'll explore Edmonton's true cost of living, to hopefully assist you with that decision.

1. Housing - How much do homes cost and how much is the average rent?
2. Taxes - Sales Tax, Property Tax, Land Transfer Tax, and Income Tax
3. Utilities - Water, Electricity, and Heat
4. Food and Entertainment - Cost of dining at a restaurant, going to hockey games, and local events

  • Last year I moved from BC to Edmonton and am very disapointed about my decision. First, I was employed until November and then I lost my job and suffered unemployment throughout the winter. It has led to a huge drain on my savings. Secondly, the car insurance prices are over the roof compared to BC. I personally had to pay $200 more. On top of that, I have left my social circle back in BC, now suffering from loneliness. It did not work out for me, I am still looking for a job to pay the bills. However, I have learned from my lesson that the only free cheese is in the mouse trap and you are the mouse to be trapped in Alberta. That's why they are calling you to move.

Is it possible to buy property in Edmonton as a US-born citizen? I live in Houston and travel to Calgary/Edmonton often for business. I like Edmonton more than Calgary as a summer city (although I also like Banff being close to Calgary!)…looking to buy a second property there for the summers to escape the intense heat/humidity here in Houston from June-September
  • Thanks for the important information. Without a car is it possible to survive in the winter season for a family with one toddler?

I’m moving to Edmonton in the new year from Vancouver. Absolutely no way I’m staying in Bc given the rising prices. Do I need a car?

I’ll be landing in Edmonton in July, switched my landing zone from Winnipeg , did I make a mistake? Also would you be interested in having a chat? I’ll be a new arrival from London Uk
  • Hey Evan, my friend, I'll be moving to canada in December. Just got my PR, and I'm excited, and I'm still undecided about what province to settle in. I'm coming in from Nigeria. What do you advise?

Not if you are on AISH. Trying to get my Sister in Law into an apartment and she is on AISH. Even if my wife were to BUY a cheap condo and charge her only what our expenses are it would be beyond her bodget. I currently pay less for my Mortgage, Property Taxes and insurance than the average price for a 2BR Apartment here. I bought this house in 2013.

I sadly can’t afford to pay rent anywhere and I can’t afford to buy groceries. I don’t think that it’s exclusive to Edmonton or anywhere in Canada.

1:30 Without a shadow of a doubt, the reason why Calgary will and should always cost more than Edmonton, is location. Calgary is a 1h drive to what is generally considered one of the, if not the most beautiful locations in Canada, The Rocky Mountains. Edmonton is a 4h drive from anything that isn't a flat farmers field and for a lot of people, that just isn't acceptable quality of life. Also, Edmonton's airport is probably the worst set up in any city over 1m people, possibly in the world. Edmonton's airport has very few international destination, almost all trips travel to Calgary, Vancouver, or Toronto, unless you're going Cancun, almost guaranteed, you have a layover. The same is absolutely not true from Calgary. Also, Edmonton's airport is a 30+ minute drive south of the city, and get this, even if you live on the South side of the city, it costs $75 each way in taxi to get to the airport. That is actually attrocious and unacceptable, but won't be fixed for another hundred years due to bad planning. Compare that to Vancouver, you can take a $4 train from anywhere in the city to the airport in half the time. Much like most major cities in the world.

Only a fool would move to edmonton or Alberta.crime is off the charts..jobs are gone During the boom it was awesome, tons of jobs, but Alberta is not the golden land it was, Prices are thru the roof, jobs are gone, foreigners are taking over, utilities & food are ridiculous.. If you don't already live here...stay where you are to avoid disappointment... Lived here all my life & if I could afford to leave I'd be out of here.
  • @georgec6405
give it a year and edmonton will be unaffordable due to the influx of people from BC and Ontario. if your in Alberta already get on buying that house before our market is ruined.
