Visitors, campers and residents of Jasper National Park and the town of Jasper were told to evacuate Monday night as high temperatures and winds fanned the flames of a wildfire threatening the national park in western Alberta.

People were told to head west on Highway 16/the Yellowhead towards British Columbia.

Jasper is home to around 4,000 residents and is a popular tourist destination.

Kendra Slugoski reports.

I lived in Jasper for 25 years. This is not a surprise unfortunately. Everyone living there knew this wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. The location of the townsite , coupled with decades of fire suppression, pine beetle, etc. created a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, according to the friends I talked to, everyone managed to evacuate, this could have trapped the entire town, and been much worse.

This is one of my favourite areas in this country, this is so devastating

The poor animals too. People can leave and get to safety, the wildlife suffers greatly. 😢

The fire danger rises so quickly when suddenly 2 of your 3 exits out of Jasper have been blocked by fire . All it takes is a spark to ignite another fire blocking your last exit out then we’d really have a problem! I’ve spent a lot a time In Jasper it’s heartbreaking & I hope everyone makes it out safely & hope the firefighters are able to protect the town & surrounding area . All the wildlife too ahh so sad 😢 Best wishes to everyone

Gotta point thermal cameras out to the horizon to witness any suspect fires starting without anyone on the ground.

    impossible to prevent forest-fires in areas where so many inland-conservatives live...chucking their cigarette-butts everywhere & ignoring fire-bans. it's a lost-cause IMO

There isn't a spot within 60 miles of Jasper where lightning could strike and not hit a pine beetle tree....

Imagine we built drones for fire fighting instead of warfare. Heat seeking water carrying drones that could use AI to map a fire and put out fire out as quick as possible.

the level of incompetency by the Federal + Provincial Government and their employees is Absurd. Alberta and BC have been burning for years , why are there any tree's ect , allowed within 1 mile of any town ?? this is Intentional !

Didn’t this happen in the same town last year?

I was taught, all the billions which went abroad was a good investment into Canadas future. Just saying. Perhaps it would have been a way-way-way better investment to put the money into pimping up emmergency response at home - and into relief funds for those who loose their homes to fires and flooding.... ? But what do I know...

For this reason alone……. Don’t buy an EV. Any emergency situation and you’ll be stranded
