A Documentary on the mount pleasant building flats in Dublin during the late 1960s. These buildings were one of the most run down, tightly cramped, poverty stricken areas in Dublin at this time. Many people who lived here could not afford to pay their rent in their previous homes so their only alternative was to move into these accommodations, for the others these flats were merely all that they could ever afford to live in.

Just so sad, and so much judgement. Went to Ireland a few years ago , beautiful people and countryside. I am amazed at their spirit, considering the utter poverty and prejudice they have faced over the centuries. 💐

Hard to imagine, how people could live in such small space. Like d family of 11. Despite the sadness of this pictures it is amazing to see his families still managing their day to day lives in such conditions. And we tend to lament bout ridicolous things sometimes. We are so spoiled nowadays .

I have read many books on Dublin and Irish housing Policy and this is the general setup for a few hundred years prior... Now we might be able to understand why Ballymun appealed to so many at the time!

I remember the place well. I grew up on Rugby Road adjacent to the buildings. In the 70's as a child I found it a strange environment. As the kids there grew up many turned to drugs and joy riding and I know a few that didn't survive long into their adult years as a result. The entire place was demolished and there were a few straglers who wouldn't leave and held up the rebuild process. The site of all this is now old folks accomodation fronting Oxford Rd and Swan Grove is the main portion

Poor people was terrible the way they lived the Dublin accent seem to be a lot softer in those days as well.

I suppose Irish people emigrated just for fun and to build other economies all over the globe. Unless we recognise and deal with the genesis of poverty and deprivation we only exacerbate the problem and miss a golden opportunity to grow this Republic. We have been let down so many times, the cycle continues....

My Dublin folks emigrated out in the mid -50's. There have been many tough times for the Irish throughout history. When was this footage originally aired? Was this done by RTE?
