I saw this on the discovery channel where it was called Anatomy of an Alien. It's still one of my favorites. FYI the Cambrian animations come from a show called Planet of Life. I liked all the episodes, but the Cambrian animations come from the Ancient Oceans episode. It's not technically spec zoo, but the Cambrian is so weird it feels like spec zoo.

Another lost classic of speculative, but plausible, alien life is 2005's "Extraterrestrial." There were two episodes each featuring a different alien world: Episode 1: Aurelia Planet Aurelia is a tidally locked world with the niche of trees occupied by animals. They are photosynthetic and very treelike animals but still mobile. Episode 2: The Blue Moon The Blue Moon is dominated by forests of kilometer high interconnected trees. Additionally, the atmosphere is much denser than that of Earth. Hence, flight is much easier. Above the canopy of the Pagota forest are vast clouds of aerial plankton fed upon by sky whales.

It's surprising to know there's so much good content on the matter.

Just watched this documentary weeks ago and man does it need more attention. It’s seriously a great start for those into alien life and speculative evolution, like me of course. The fact that Dougal Dixon starred in it as well is just charming.
