In Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, the corpse of the holy character Father Zosima decomposes and leaves the odor of decomposition and everyone is scandalized. Dostoevsky was himself a man of great faith but thought it ridiculous that the sign of a person’s holiness was whether their corpse decomposed rather than what their actions were in life.
