Make sure when you're replacing your small engine fuel pump you go with a factory mikuni brand. Don't waste your time or money on a cheap fuel pump.

The Mikuni pump you need:
Steel rebuildable one here,

Plastic Briggs/Mikuni in the video,

Although your “5 seconds” to measure fuel flow isn’t consistent, this video did steer me in the right diagnostic direction to investigate an issue with a lawn tractor, so thanks very much! 🔧👍

Thanks for the video ! Been tweaking my zero turn for almost 2yrs. Always something! Crank, takes forever to start. Replaced a good fuel pump. Starts right away. Thanks so much

Great video - many many thanks. I have a Toro Zero Turn 24HP that has this year had two fuel pumps fitted this year and is still surging (hunting). It has been driving me mad. So many may thanks again.

With all respect to you for providing these troubleshooting hints, I did have some concerns. When you were testing the original remember that the pump was already primed so the amount of fuel delivery during this test would be more than when you tested the new pumps. Also I feel that the Pulse tube from the rocker cover should have been replaced before the testing to ensure that maximum vacuum was achieved. Other than that, your video provided enough information to allow for proper fault diagnosis. Thank you.

Even with name brand parts it is hit or miss. Nearly all are Chinese parts. Ironically, I've had one crappy "cheap part" that didn't work and one that didn't fit. I have had 3 "quality" Oregon/Briggs carburetors/pumps that didn't work right. I really think it's a roll of the dice anymore.

Went to a 12v low psi pump went threw 5 Kawasaki original pumps all leaked in the the pulse line my mower has never ran this good relay and switch i turn off my pump and let my carb empty and haven't had a single issue with carb or pump 5 years now cost 50$ in all

Thanks for the info. This is exactly what I'm dealing with. I installed a cheap pump on my 20 hp Briggs V-twin. There's no fuel going to the carb. Yet, when I pour gas into the hose to the carb and reattach the line, it runs perfectly until the gas is gone.
  • Thanks, bro. I bought cheap ones from Amazon and fix them into my generator. But the fuel problem was the same(not enough fuel pumping to the engine). As these were brand new ones I thought the vacuum system was the problem. Check the values and did many things spending almost two days. But the problem remains the same. Finally, your video solves the prob.
  • Thanks for showing people this! It could cost them an engine if they don’t check the oil level to make sure gas isn’t getting sucked back into the engine!
  • Good information. Thanks for the extra steps to show us the difference.

Thank you for this ,ordered this pump and mower is working well.

Bingo ! I bought a ZT1 cub cadet. It wasnt running well because mice got up in the engine and chewed the coil wire. Previous owner said he put a new fuel pump on it . He gave me the old one (OEM Walbro). I was experiencing problems with the way it ran. I watched your video, changed the "NEW" fuel pump CHINA JUNK, and put the old Walbro back on, and it starts better, and runs great ! Thanks bro.

Because of your test procedure found the problem with cheap fuel pumps, either not working or not pumping fuel correctly. Thanks!
  • Good advice, Problem is Mikuni is junk too!! Dealing these issues now, purchased a Oregon brand.. with the screws in side , It worked for a few hours then started with same problems as the old one that had been on the mower for a few years, So I went down to a mower dealer & purchased the Briggs & Stratton brand , Just verified it was made by Mikuni, It worked for an hour or so before giving me problems, I can a switch the pumps back & forth and they may work for 5-15 mins before they stop pumping. And I’ve checked every other possible culprit for the issues, So it has to be I got 2 💩 fuel pumps in a row, 2nd of which is the brand you recommended, Even the guy at parts counter made a slight reference that they had recently received a bunch of bad fuel pumps.
