a part of Doom's legacy that I'm not sure a lot of people know about: Gabe Newell credited Doom 95 with the reason why he created Valve and Steam. He was working tech support for Microsoft, and kept getting calls to help install Doom... even for non-windows platforms.

I still remember playing Doom and Duke Nukem against friends in my high school's computer lab, back in Ye Olde Nineteen-Hundred Nineties before schools figured out how to lock-down their computers and make students use them for only legitimate purposes. It helped that our computer lab teacher was a former Marine who thought those games were hilarious; if we finished our work on time he would turn off the lights and say "okay guys, time for killin'!" Ah, Mr. Cardoza, I wonder where you are now.
