BYD Song L - A Chinese Car That's Actually Fun To Drive

Published 2024-06-23
Chinese electric cars have proven their overall competence as products, but they're rarely much fun to drive. The BYD Song L is one such exception. Not only is it stunning to look at, it delivers on the thrills behind the wheel too, feeling far more connected to the driver than pretty much every other Chinese car out there. And no, we didn't think we'd be saying that for BYD either.

The Song L proves that BYD can now do affordable, fun, and sexy as well, and we're all for it, because the way to the hearts and minds of European consumers is through the wheel, not just through touchscreens and heated seats. If this one goes abroad, it should be a hit.

  • I am a fan of Zeeker and BYD(for its blade battery and DM-i technology). BYD’s DM-i technology is truly amazing, it makes Toyota’s hybrid be like a technolog from the Paleolithic Period. I guess that's why Toyota is gonna adapt BYD’s DM-i technology. Also like competition, that's why Tesla has dropped over $30k in last few years because of Chinese competition. A BYD Seal cost US$30 in Australia but it sells for US$52 in Europe, I think we are lucky in Australia. We can use the saved $22k to make holidays, buy groceries, pay bills, etc. Thanks for competition.

This is the best looking BYD yet.
  • @MrVeeBlog
This car is beautiful. Just beautiful. Keep em coming.
  • @amniote69
Thanks for the review! I hope BYD brings this to Europe.

This is a mini Tang. Looks amazing and unlike the Tang it was built as an EV from the ground up. I really wish my Tang a trunk.

This and KIA EV6; absolutely the best designs in their classes. Love 'em both. But I would prefer Song L over EV6.

Just beautiful, amazing, BYD should bring it to Europe as soon as possible
  • A Chinese car that's 'ACTUALLY' fun to drive? You make it sound like all Chinese cars are NOT fun to drive. I have driven a few Chinese cars recently. They were all fun and pleasurable experiences.
  • Ah, I finally understood why you liked it so much: because you felt well the road, while the Xpeng are much more discreet and comfortable!

Hope they launch all BYD models to the UK soon :) Including PHEVs as well.

We've come at a time when a chinese company can make a better looking hot hatch than a german company (looking at you, new gen 1 Series). I hope BYD would consider bringing the Song L to Indonesia

At first glance, it did look like a hatchback at least until the size became apparent. Wouldn't complain if they go down that route.
  • I'm getting strong Camry, sports trim, vibes up front. I like it. I just wish it was a sedan.
  • I think this is the BYD I would be most likely to buy. While they have their premium brands, they are doing a good job bringing up their mass offerings. First to do it was the HAN, this is following that

Look forward to it arriving in Australia😊
