2018 Writing & Reading Goals (& Middlemarch Status!)

Published 2017-12-13
More specifically, beginning-of-2018 writing and reading goals! Find out what I'm writing now, what I plan to read next, and why I gave up (sorry!) on Middlemarch.

(PS I know LOTR is technically considered one novel, but I'm so used to thinking of it as a trilogy!)

  • Sorry you gave up on Middlemarch. I just ‘discovered’ George Eliot’s fiction earlier this year and I am really enjoying her so far, but I fully admit she is not for everybody. Eliot was a highly descriptive, cinematic writer before cinema existed so I understand why it is tough going! I also watched your video asking for help with Middlemarch. What helps me get through these dense classics is to print them up, chapter at a time, from Gutenberg.org - and this gives me an excuse to keep notes on the page as I go. Highlight text, outline characters to keep track of them, notes and thoughts to myself, ... you have trouble keeping track of characters? Me too! Outline the characters and draw the family trees as you go and it helps you remember. Writing notes as I read really helped me enjoy the book more.
