Join me in a journey into hip hop lore to discuss one of hip hop's forgotten legends lost in time. He's a rapper that barely anyone remembers but for a moment in the mid 90s he was considered to be one of the rappers that would lead hip hop into the next generation. Why was he so hyped and why does nobody remember him, and how is his legacy so important in the first place?

I want to give recognition to the following sources that helped me flesh out this video.

We need a 30 minute Video of you feeding questionable Cannabis lyrics Anthony Fantano

Canibus once said, and i think this is my fav bar of all time: "whenever the head is severed from the human body with a sharp enough weapon the brain remains concious for ten seconds - long enough for me to give you one last message and when you get to hell you can tell Lucifer I said it"
  • @xSaintxSmithx
Canibus penned my favorite bar of all time. "Every word I ever uttered for hip-hop lovers will reflect forever like two mirrors facing each other."
  • My favorite bar from canibus is. A wise man sees failure as progress A fool divorces his knowledge and misses the logic And loses his soul in the process Obsessed with nonsense with a caricature that has no content Poet Laureate II So true 💯

Canibus is my favorite rapper of all time. As he said "I'm ahead of my time or so they say. I guess that's why I already feel old and gray."
  • @5thnametry
"Everything is drake" really REALLY hit me. I feel we are aligned in this. I always talk about the diversity of acts we used to have.

As a longtime Canibus fan since the Lost Boyz Era, this is the first video I've seen where his failures are viewed with empathy rather than played for laughs. The mentions to neurodivergence and mental health were very interesting as well & bring humanity to a person who hasn't publicly been treated with much. Thanks for this, FD.

still can’t believe they told us LL won that beef. one of the things that woke me up to the reality of power and industry in music as a youngin…and the relative muteness of conscious rap…and the fact black thought never saw biggie/tupac level success
  • @tommybradley1169
Can-I-bus is probably the most diabolical word smith ever…” I’ll fly ya body out of Dallas, perform plastic surgery while we’re airborne, then switch caskets, then lie to the masses, I’ll tell them that you got murdered over some east/west beef between rappers, radio stations will express they sadness, play classics back to back and pass out “ stop the violence pamphlets….

Speaking of rappers who were weird little freaks (I mean that in the most loving way possible): An analysis of MF Doom and his struggles and reclusiveness would be amazing.

as a zoomer who was a literal infant by the end of the 90s i really appreciate your videos that delve into the history of hip hop
  • CanIBus just loved the sport. He came from battle rap and freestyle and stayed about it regardless of how the industry moved.

My FIRST thought was Del tha Funkee Homosapien bc after listening to 3030 my mind was opened to a insane plethora of sci-fi lyricism that was never before even hinted at to me, it changed my whole interpretation of story telling and writing from mere words and music. and after that I cant believe I was so wrong. I knew who Canibus was but never gave a second thought to his tracks and boy was I wrong for doing so.

This is one HELL of a video. The discussion regarding mental health/Neuro divergence really hits home for me. Now 43, my parents had us seeing a therapist before we reached double digits, but an ADHD diagnosis didn't exist yet (to my knowledge). Having seen multiple therapists, dealing with depression and anxiety (due in part to being socially awkward and not really understanding friendship/relationship dynamics) I've been diagnosed with ADHD at 42... And am working through it. Thanks FD for taking that moment to discuss.

How could you mention Canibus's military career without mentioning how he wanted to be a fighter jet pilot so badly that he spent six grand on eye surgery just to find out he was too old to learn to fly one?! Craziest detail in that story! Shame though that does suck...
  • @OUTDABOXX1
I met him in 2012 he was cool as hell treated me like he knew me for years solidified him as my favorite of all time
  • @LadyPoetic09
Much respect and a true thank you for this video. Long time friend and fan of Bis right here, since 1998. We must give Canibus his flowers. An indelible mark on the culture, indeed; this was a very eloquent and thoughtful video. Thank you. -LP

Bro...seeing Canibus in that battle with Diz....that shit made my soul weep for my fallen hero. It was like seeing your favorite boxer go one too many rounds...

This man is the definition of "Saying everything and nothing at the same time" GOATED
  • @AURAxSTAR
