Diane Lau is among tens of thousands of Hongkongers struggling to make ends meet after the coronavirus pandemic hit her city on the heels of anti-government protests that began in June 2019. The 34-year-old single mother, lost her job in February 2020, and has since been making ends meet with money borrowed from her mother and government subsidies. After Covid-19 started to spread in the city, Hong Kong’s jobless rate spiked to 6.2 per cent from April to June 2020, the highest in 15 years and worse than the figure was after the 2008 global financial crisis. While many have lost jobs, others have had to take pay cuts or told to go on unpaid leave with no assurances about when and if they will go back to work.

  • WHY DOES THIS CHANNEL ALWAYS POST STRUGGLING PEOPLE BUT NEVER LINK A GO FUND ME OR FIND WAYS TO HELP???
  • @TNP33
So sad. On top of that, HK has the worlds most expensive housing costs. I thought CA was bad, HK is worse. Heartbreaking
  • Unfortunate for many who are innocent and become victims but embroiled by unrest and pandemic. So those communism or democracy make any difference? In today's whole, its a government social policies makes the difference, not politicis. Where are the pro democracy goons who begged others to sanction their own country? And those who celebrate Trump for giving them a fantastic gift when the Act was passed last year? Now made in HK is made in China. Any difference? The only 1 is laughing is USA not China. USA wont help you, China will. Wake Up HKers!
  • @Beingsha
    Jobless are everywhere nowadays 😔
  • I hope the best for that woman. At 34, many people in the U.S. are still trying to find themselves. I'm glad to see that HK does have a safety net, of some kind, but I hope this video will help her find work.
  • @biglance
She needs to start a youtube channel, teach people, get on Bitcoin and Monero to accept donations/payments for teaching etc. The local gov'ts can only do so much, people around the world MUST help each other, our "loving governments" won't help us, she is lucky she is in HK, imagine the people in 3rd world countries, they are dead. peace.
  • Even without the pandemic, as an artist she was already starving.
  • Respect to all mothers around the globe. Your dedication and love actually defines the purest reference example for what love is.
  • I dont like seeing anybody suffer. I hope you all in Hong Kong get along okay!
  • hope they can pull through. Everybody is dealing and coping with changes..
  • This is our world, where a lot of people can scarcely make a living whilst very few others carry all before them. Around sixty richest people in the world own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world's population.

Me too. I am 23 and just started my career in 2019. I am jobless since the end of March. And now I have to go back to my hometown at my parent's house. It's feel embarrassed since I haven't give them anything yet. Sometimes I feel useless. While the job market is getting though and more competitive than ever. I hope the world will be better really soon. Edit: finally today (8/21) I got an offer from one of the biggest e-commerce company in my country😭😭
  • Poverty occurs all over the world and HK is not alone. However her dilema is made worse by the riots which paralysed business activities for the whole of last year and consequently HK is now in recession.
  • My mom was a single parent too I feel for her, It's really sad but we must stay strong and stay positive specially this times, We stayed and worked in Hong Kong and It has been our second home. Stay safe everyone.

be a single mother is hard. The father doesn't want to help out.
  • @carly918
When the gov tries to help out from the beginning , by stop the riot and sending medical assistance, some scums refused as they claimed themselves representing the interest of HK ppl, now ppl like her is even suffering to feed herself and her kid.
