Reinterpreting the Major Tom character as a means of addressing one's own previous cocaine addiction sounds like one of the most David Bowie things David Bowie could've possibly done.

They used to say Bowie was four years ahead of everyone else, but everyone else could not follow this master of music.
  • the guy in the background reading the lyrics and going "woa-woah" in a deadpan way always makes me smile.

Definitely one of my favourite Bowie songs, such an awesome feel to it
  • “Want an axe to break the ice, want to come down right now...” probably the saddest lyrics in the song

It’s interesting what happens every time you listen to a song as good as this and in stereo. It can not be truly appreciated unless you really pay attention and this song takes you places that exist somewhere in the future and in the past at the same time. Bowie was a master of crafting a one of kind song and sound that no one could replicate but appreciated by those on that level of greatness.

Do you remember a guy that's been In such an early song? I've heard a rumor from Ground Control Oh no, don't say it's true They got a message from the Action Man "I'm happy, hope you're happy too I've loved all I've needed, love Sordid details following" The shrieking of nothing is killing, just Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing Ashes to ashes, funk to funky We know Major Tom's a junkie Strung out in heaven's high Hitting an all-time low Time and again I tell myself I'll stay clean tonight But the little green wheels are following me Oh no, not again I'm stuck with a valuable friend "I'm happy, hope you're happy too" One flash of light but no smoking pistol I never done good things (I never done good things) I never done bad things (I never done bad things) I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh Want an axe to break the ice Wanna come down right now Ashes to ashes, funk to funky We know Major Tom's a junkie Strung out in heaven's high Hitting an all-time low My mother said, to get things done You'd better not mess with Major Tom My mother said, to get things done You'd better not mess with Major Tom My mother said, to get things done You'd better not mess with Major Tom My mother said, to get things done You'd better not mess with Major Tom
  • My all time favorite David Bowie song. What incredible lyrics and an amazingly funky tune. RIP Starman/Ziggy Stardust/The Thin White Duke etc. A man whose lyrical poetry shaped an entire genre of music and the music industry in general.

That synth outro kills me every time.

I love the fact that he’s facing up to his past with such honesty! But to incorporate it with such fine art is breathtaking.
